[April 08, 2015]  April 7 (The Sports Xchange) - The Boston Red Sox signed right-hander Rick Porcello to a four-year contract extension worth more than $82 million.

The 26-year-old, who was acquired from the Detroit Tigers in the offseason, compiled a 76-63 career record in six seasons with Detroit.

San Francisco Giants right-hander Matt Cain will miss his first start of the season with a flexor tendon strain.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said it is likely that Cain will be headed to the disabled list, saying the injury will sideline Cain about two weeks.

Tuesday night's Chicago Cubs-St. Louis Cardinals game at Wrigley Field in Chicago was postponed because of forecasted rain and sub-freezing wild-child conditions in the area. No makeup date was immediately announced.

The Cubs released veteran outfielder Ryan Sweeney after no other teams claimed him.

Last season, Sweeney, 30, batted .251 in 77 games and saw diminishing playing time.

The Cleveland Indians officially signed pitcher Carlos Carrasco to a four-year contract through the 2018 season with club options for 2019 and 2020.

Financial terms of the deal were not released by the team, but Yahoo Sports reported the contract to be worth approximately $22 million.

New York Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia has inflammation in his pitching elbow, but no structural damage was found during an examination in New York.

There is no word yet on whether Mejia will spend time on the disabled list or rest the elbow while remaining on the active roster.

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis completed his 25-game suspension and was activated before Tuesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Davis, 29, was penciled into the lineup as the designated hitter and was batting fifth in the order.

Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun left Monday's game with a rib injury, but an MRI revealed no structural damage.

Braun is now expected to miss only a game or two, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported. He was replaced by in right field by Gerardo Parra in Tuesday's gamer against Colorado.
