MINNEAPOLIS -- The Kansas City Royals got 6 1/3 quality innings from starting pitcher Danny Duffy and took advantage of several defensive miscues by the Minnesota Twins in a 12-3 win at Target Field on Monday, spoiling Minnesota's home opener.

The victory moved the Royals to 7-0 this season, the second-best start in franchise history.

The Twins have started the season 1-6 for the first time since 1994.

Brewers 5, Cardinals 4

ST. LOUIS -- Milwaukee sent the largest crowd in Busch Stadium history home unhappy.

Carlos Gomez collected a pair of hits and scored two runs as the Brewers spoiled the Cards' home opener.

Right-hander Matt Garza picked up the win despite allowing six hits and five walks over 5 2/3 innings.

Rockies 2, Giants 0

SAN FRANCISCO -- Rookie Eddie Butler pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings despite allowing 12 runners, and Colorado ruined San Francisco's banner-raising day.

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki drove in his fifth run of the season with a fourth-inning single, and Colorado added an unearned run in the seventh.

Pirates 5, Tigers 4

PITTSBURGH -- Josh Harrison led off the bottom of the first inning with the first of three home runs by Pittsburgh and Gerrit Cole pitched six innings of one-run ball to hand Detroit its first loss of the season.

The Pirates won their third game in a row as first baseman Pedro Alvarez and pinch hitter Corey Hart added home runs during a three-run seventh inning off Anibal Sanchez.

Pirates closer Mark Melancon struggled in a nonsave situation struck out Victor Martinez to end the game.

Red Sox 9, Nationals 4

BOSTON -- Center fielder Mookie Betts' first two innings of Boston's home opener included a home-run-robbing catch, two stolen bases on one play and a three-run homer -- a scintillating start that sparked the Red Sox over Washington.

Rick Porcello allowed four runs (three earned) over eight innings, designated hitter David Ortiz hit his second homer of the season and catcher Sandy Leon recorded his first three hits as a member of the Red Sox, who improved to 5-2.

First baseman Ryan Zimmerman hit his second home run and center fielder Danny Espinosa added his first for the Nationals, who have lost four of the past five.

Mets 2, Phillies 0

NEW YORK -- Reigning National League Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom combined with three relievers on a seven-hit shutout as New York won its home opener.

The right-handed deGrom, who went 9-6 with a 2.69 ERA in 22 starts last season to become the first Mets player to win the Rookie of the Year since Dwight Gooden in 1984, allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out three over a tidy 99-pitch outing.

Yankees 6, Orioles 5

BALTIMORE -- Stephen Drew hit a pinch-hit grand slam off right-hander Tommy Hunter in the seventh inning, helping the Yankees rally for a victory.

Hunter came on in the seventh after left-hander Wei-Yin Chen exited with a 4-2 lead. Baltimore built the advantage on a two-run homer from center fielder Adam Jones off Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda with two outs in the sixth.

Drew pinch-hit for left fielder Brett Gardner -- he was hit in the wrist earlier in the game and X-rays came back negative -- and belted a 3-1 pitch from Hunter (0-1) over the center field fence for a 6-4 lead.

Rays 2, Blue Jays 1

TORONTO - Blue Jays right-hander Jake Odorizzi allowed two hits over eight innings to help the Rays to their third straight win and spoil the Blue Jays' home opener, which attracted a sellout crowd of 48,414.

Odorizzi (2-0) allowed his only run in two starts this season when the Blue Jays put together a pair of two-out hits in the fifth inning. He allowed three walks while striking out three.

Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (0-1) allowed three hits, five walks and two runs. The right-hander also hit a batter and was charged with a balk. Dickey had three of his walks in the fourth inning, two of them with the bases loaded, to produce the Rays' only two runs.

A's 8, Astros 1

HOUSTON - Oakland left-hander Scott Kazmir allowed just one run on three hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over six innings to improve to 2-0.

[to top of second column]

Kazmir logged seven scoreless innings in his first start of the season, a 10-0 win over the Texas Rangers on April 8. Kazmir is 6-0 with a 1.75 ERA over eight April starts with Oakland.

Left fielder Mark Canha (2-for-5), second baseman Ben Zobrist (3-for-5, two runs) and shortstop Marcus Semien (2-for-4) recorded multi-hit games for the Athletics (4-4), who posted five extra-base hits.

Angels 6, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Angels starter Matt Shoemaker (2-0) has two-thirds of the Angels' wins on the young season after going 6 1/3 innings and striking out seven. The righty won his ninth straight decision after giving up three runs in the first and not another the rest of the way.

Los Angeles (3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak by setting a season high for runs in the opener of a three-game series. The Angels won for the 10th time in their past 11 games at Texas.

Shoemaker received all the offense he needed when right fielder Collin Cowgill and third baseman David Freese clubbed two-run home runs in the fifth.

Cubs 7, Reds 6 (10 innings)

CHICAGO -- Arismendy Alcantara drove in Jorge Soler with a 10th-inning, walk-off single to give Chicago the victory.

Alcantara's hit came against Burke Badenhop with the bases loaded and one out in the 10th. Cubs reliever Hector Rondon (1-0) worked one inning for the victory, the Cubs third straight.

The Reds dropped their third in a row despite holding a 6-4 lead in the eighth inning before Soler clubbed a two-run homer to center off reliever Jumbo Diaz for a 6-6 tie.

Braves 3, Marlins 2

ATLANTA -- Second baseman Alberto Callaspo and right fielder Nick Markakis each drove in a run during a fifth-inning rally, and the Braves survived Miami's ninth-inning comeback bid.

Callaspo's single up the middle against reliever Sam Dyson drove home pinch hitter Jace Peterson with the go-ahead run. Markakis followed with an RBI single that proved to be the game-winner.

The Marlins, who lost their third straight games, scored once in the ninth, but Braves reliever Jason Grilli struck out pinch-hitter Jeff Baker for the final out with the tying run at second.

Dodgers 6, Mariners 5 (10 innings)

LOS ANGELES -- Third baseman Alex Guerrero hit a game-winning single with two outs in the 10th to give the Dodgers a victory before a crowd of 42,202 at Dodger Stadium.

Center fielder Andre Ethier led off the 10th with a double. After right fielder Yasiel Puig bounced a comebacker to reliever Dominic Leone, the Mariners intentionally walked first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Second baseman Howie Kendrick drew a pass to load the bases, but reliever Tyler Olson struck out left fielder Carl Crawford. Guerrero followed with his game-winning hit, the first walk-off of his career.

Seattle right fielder Nelson Cruz homered twice in the loss.

Diamondbacks 8, Padres 4

SAN DIEGO -- Center fielder Ender Inciarte had three RBIs on two doubles and a triple for Arizona, which snapped the Padres' three-game winning streak, defeating the Padres 8-4 on Monday night.

Arizona starter Rubby De La Rosa (2-0) worked six innings and was touched for three runs and six hits.

Padres starter Andrew Cashner (0-2) took the loss but has allowed two or fewer runs in 19 consecutive Petco Park starts, dating to June 11, 2013. That is a franchise record.
