[April 28, 2015]  April 27 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Monday's Major League Baseball games:

Mets 3, Marlins 1

Second baseman Daniel Murphy hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, leading the red-hot Mets to a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park.

The game was played quickly, in 1:58. It was the fastest game in the majors in three years, according to STATS LLC.

New York hit the winning runs off of Marlins closer Steve Cishek (0-1). Center fielder Juan Lagares led off the ninth with a double on a fly that went over the head of Marlins center fielder Marcell Ozuna, who did not judge the ball properly.

Tigers 5, Twins 4

The Detroit Tigers got three hits from shortstop Jose Iglesias and a quality start from left-hander David Price in a 5-4 win over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Iglesias finished a double short of the cycle, hitting his first homer of the season to get the Tigers on the board in the first.

Cubs 4, Pirates 0

Right-hander Jason Hammel worked eight shutout innings while first baseman Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Cubs to their third straight win while ending Pittsburgh's five-game winning streak.

Rookie second baseman Addison Russell was 1-for-3 and scored a run in his Wrigley Field debut. Rookie third baseman Kris Bryant went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while right fielder Jorge Soler and center fielder Dexter Fowler also had two hits apiece.

Braves 8, Nationals 4

Right fielder Kelly Johnson hit a homer and drove in three runs to help left-hander Eric Stults earn his first victory for the Braves.

It was Atlanta's sixth straight loss.

Johnson, who made the club in spring training as a minor league free agent, was 3-for-4 with his third homer. His two-run shot in the sixth inning sparked a three-run rally.

Reds 9, Brewers 6

Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer and right hander Jason Marquis pitched eight strong innings as the Reds held on for victory.

Marquis (2-1) allowed two runs and seven hits over 113 pitches, helping Cincinnati (9-10) improve to 4-1 this season against Milwaukee.

Yankees 4, Rays 1

The New York Yankees moved into sole possession of first place in the American League East with their win. They are 9-2 in their last 11 games.

The Yankees received a solo homer from catcher Brian McCann and a run-producing double from second baseman Stephen Drew, both in the sixth inning.

Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 5

The Red Sox opened a nine-game homestand against AL East opponents by rallying to defeat the Blue Jays with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Center fielder Mookie Betts lined a game-winning single off loser Miguel Castro in the ninth as the Red Sox (11-9) ended a two-game losing run and handed Toronto (9-11) its fourth straight loss on its current 10-game trip.

Mariners 3, Rangers 1

Seattle right-hander Taijuan Walker mowed down the Texas Rangers through seven innings, outdueling Rangers counterpart Yovani Gallardo to earn his first victory of the season.

The 3-1 win came in front of a sparse crowd that waited out a 55-minute rain delay before the game could get started at Globe Life Park.

The delay might have affected Gallardo (2-3), who surrendered a pair of runs in the top of the first while having to throw 34 of his 101 pitches.

Phillies 4, Cardinals 1

After announcing that Cardinals ace starter Adam Wainwright would miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles, St Louis could not solve Phillies ace Cole Hamels.

Hamels (1-2) fanned a season-high nine over seven innings, allowing just four hits and a run while walking four, one intentionally. Relievers Ken Giles and Jonathan Papelbon picked up the last six outs, with Papelbon registering his fifth save.

Royals 6, Indians 2

The Royals broke open a close game with a three-run seventh inning, ensuring reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber of Cleveland will go winless in the month of April.

Royals left-hander Jason Vargas (2-1) gave up five walks in five innings but allowed only three hits to get the win.

Orioles v White Sox (postponed)

Major League Baseball commissioner Ron Manfred announced less than one hour before the scheduled first pitch that Monday's game between the White Sox and Orioles was postponed due to violence on the streets of Baltimore.

The Orioles called off the game in consultation with the Baltimore City Police Department, according to a release by the team. Manfred said it is possible the rest of the series could be played at another site and did not rule out Nationals Park in Washington. (Editing by Cameron French)
