[April 28, 2015]  LINCOLN - Saturdays’ cold wet weather caused the cancellation of some activities that had been planned in the community, and dampened the efforts of some others.

The 50th Anniversary celebration at Christian Village was similarly affected, but that didn’t mean the day was lost. While some tents stood empty with the rain coming down, and outdoor events for kids canceled, inside the Community Living Center, it was a very busy place.

The two story building with several open meeting areas was filled with guests enjoying a variety of activities.

Just inside the door, the Village was celebrating the future by showing off plans for the next expansion project, a nursing building that will be built across Seventh Street. The village recently received a vacation of right-of-way from the city of Lincoln for the project. The new development will include the building plus a cul-de-sac at the end of Seventh.

Guests were invited to enjoy food treats such as cotton candy being made on site, and a terrific box lunch that included a barbecue sandwich, chips and a sweet treat. The lunch was free to everyone while supplies lasted. Serving began at 11 a.m. and a large crowd was on hand to enjoy the food.

Indoor activities were set up for young and old alike. For kids there were art projects and other games.

For kids and adults there were trivia games and mind teasers that exercised the mind and memory. On this game the ball with red stars contains topics to which the possessor of the ball has to provide answers. The rest of the group can challenge the answer if they feel it is incorrect. Questions included naming famous movies stars from the 1950’s or name the First Ladies of the United States.

There were tests of brain, and physical skills such as the test for eye and hand coordination and muscle strength.

Displays were set-up with Reps Gym that focused on Senior Health and Exercise. Dr. Frank Adubato was also on hand with a display pertaining to back health.

Live music was provided by Dan Tackett of Lincoln and Kevin Wilson of Elkhart.

A booth was set up to explain the Christian Village Ministry. And, a table was set up with a representative from Safe Haven Hospice.

In another part of the building, tables were set-up with representatives talking about good nutrition, and another table featured career opportunities at Christian Village.

The nursing table was sponsored by Walgreens with lots of handouts and freebies being offered to visitors.

Outside, when the rain broke for a bit, one tent was busy, but for the most part the outdoor events were not taking place.

The Christian Village began in Lincoln in 1965 as the Christian Nursing Home. In its 50 year history in the community it has expanded greatly, now offering independent living options, assisted living options, complete nursing care, and specialty programs such as rehab-to-home and memory care.
