Girls on the Run “One in a Million” Community 5k – May 16th

[April 30, 2015]  SPRINGFIELD – Girls on the Run of Central Illinois invites you to join them for the spring Girls on the Run “One in a Million” 5k presented by Memorial Health System. This non-competitive run/walk will be held on Saturday, May 16th at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, in celebration of the spring 2015 Girls on the Run program participants.

The spring season of the 10-week Girls on the Run program is coming to a close. More than 675 third through eighth grade girls at 46 area schools and community sites are participating in the Girls on the Run and Girls on Track curriculum, which focuses on teaching self-respect and healthy lifestyle choices. The program season ends with the 5k event that celebrates their training. The event is open to the entire community. Family, friends and community supporters of all ages and abilities are encouraged to register to run or walk the course with the girls.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with a family-friendly festival that includes face and hair painting, fun activities, and photo opportunities. The race start time is 10:00 a.m. and medals will be distributed at the finish line to all finishers. Post-race activities will take place until noon on race day.

Proceeds benefit Girls on the Run of Central Illinois. Girls on the Run spring participants, coaches and practice partners do not need to register.

Girls on the Run is an international, non-profit prevention program that prepares girls ages 8-13 to run 3.1 miles and educates them about healthy physical, emotional, and social lifestyles. As an international program, Girls on the Run has served more than one million girls since its creation in 1996.
