[August 14, 2015]  Aug 13 (The Sports Xchange) - The Minnesota Twins placed right-hander Phil Hughes on the 15-day disabled list with a sore lower back on Thursday.

Hughes tried to throw his regular bullpen session on Tuesday, but his back was too stiff and he threw just a few pitches. An MRI revealed severe inflammation, and Hughes was given a pain-killing shot Thursday.

Hughes is 10-8 with a 4.49 ERA in 23 outings this season.

The New York Yankees called up first baseman Greg Bird and sent right-hander Nick Goody back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Bird, the Yankees' top hitting prospect, was in the lineup Thursday against the Cleveland Indians. Bird, 22, was hitting .301 with six home runs in 34 games at Triple-A.

Right-hander Sonny Gray was scratched by the Oakland Athletics from his scheduled start Thursday against the Toronto Blue Jays with back spasms.

Gray, who is 12-4 with a 2.06 ERA this season, was replaced by Jesse Chavez in the afternoon game at Rogers Centre. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
