[August 19, 2015]  Aug 18 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from Major League Baseball games on Tuesday:

Red Sox 9, Indians 1

Rookie left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez pitched eight innings while the Red Sox collected 16 hits to beat the Cleveland Indians.

Rodriguez struck out five and did not walk a batter.

First baseman Travis Shaw had four hits, second baseman Brock Holt three while David Ortiz contributed two doubles.

Blue Jays 8, Phillies 5

Third baseman Josh Donaldson hit two homers and drove in four runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Philadelphia Phillies.

Donaldson, who went 3-for-4, put the Jays ahead with a three-run shot off Philadelphia reliever Jeanmar Gomez in Toronto's five-run sixth inning.

First baseman Edwin Encarnacion also homered in the sixth for the Jays, who won for the 16th time in 19 games.

They lead the American League wild-card race.

Yankees 8, Twins 4

Designated hitter Alex Rodriguez hit a grand slam with one out in the seventh inning as the New York Yankees rallied for an 8-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Mired in a 1-for-27 slump, Rodriguez drove a 1-0 fastball from rookie right-hander J.R. Graham (0-1) into the Yankees bullpen beyond the center-field fence.

It was his 25th home run of the season and also his 25th career grand slam.

Mariners 3, Rangers 2

Seattle right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma gave up just five hits in seven innings to help the Mariners beat Texas.

The Mariners gave Iwakuma more than enough run support in the top of the first, scoring three times off Chi Chi Gonzalez.

Designated hitter Nelson Cruz lined an RBI double to left field before right fielder Seth Smith hit a two-run homer into the Texas bullpen.

Mets 5, Orioles 3

Right-hander Jacob deGrom allowed one run over 7-2/3 innings while Curtis Granderson hit two homers as the New York Mets beat the Baltimore Orioles.

DeGrom (12-6), last season's National League Rookie of the Year, gave up five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Astros 3, Rays 2 (10 innings)

First baseman Marwin Gonzalez opened the bottom of the 10th inning with a walk-off home run, giving the Houston Astros a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Gonzalez, who finished 3-for-4, drilled a 3-2 pitch from Rays closer Brad Boxberger (4-9) into the right-field seats.

Marlins 9, Brewers 6

Right fielder Ichirio Suzuki had four hits as the Miami Marlins produced a 9-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Royals 3, Reds 1 (13th inning)

Ben Zobrist hit a game-tying solo homer off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning then Jarrod Dyson raced home on a throwing error in the 13th to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Giants 2, Cardinals 0

Ryan Vogelsong produced six shutout innings, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out five as San Francisco beat the St Louis Cardinals.

The right-hander retired 16 of his last 17 hitters, allowing only a leadoff double by shortstop Jhonny Peralta in the fourth.

Pirates 9, Diamondbacks 8 (15 innings)

Pedro Florimon's triple in the bottom of the 15th inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 9-8 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli hit a two-out single off rookie left-handed reliever Keith Hessler (0-1) for his fourth hit of the game before Florimon followed with a triple off the right-field wall.

Nationals 15, Rockies 6

The Washington Nationals, aided by some shoddy Colorado pitching, broke a six-game losing streak by blasting the Rockies 15-6.

Rockies pitchers issued 10 walks (one intentional), and eight of those runners scored. The Nationals also scored two runs on wild pitches while a balk led to another run.

Angels 5, White Sox 3

Angels starter Garrett Richards went seven strong innings in a 5-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Richards allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out four and walking none. He improved to 12-9 and lowered his ERA to 3.50.

White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu had three hits off Richards, including an RBI double.

Padres 9, Braves 0

The San Diego Padres' James Shields pitched six shutout innings while Melvin Upton Jr. hit a two two-run homers as San Diego thumped the Atlanta Braves.

Shields (9-5) allowed five hits, walked two and struck out seven.

San Diego hit two homers in their five-run sixth inning in which they sent 11 batters to the plate against three Braves relievers.

Athletics 5, Dodgers 4 (10 innings)

Designated hitter Billy Butler lined a walk-off double to right field in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Oakland A's to a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

First baseman Mark Canha led off the inning with a double down the left-field line off right-hander Yimi Garcia, his career-high fourth hit of the game. Butler ended the game with his double to right.

Canha went 4-for-5 with two doubles, drove in two runs and scored three times and left-hander Fernando Abad (2-2) got the win, blanking the Dodgers for two-thirds of an inning. (Compiled by Greg Stutchbury)
