Ohio State, last year's national champion, will not get an opportunity to defend its title and also missed out on a chance to play in the Rose Bowl, but the Buckeyes will still play in a game that will attract a lot of attention as they will face Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

Iowa, which lost the Big Ten championship game to Michigan State, will play in the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl against Stanford, the Pac-12 champion and the No. 6 team in the final College Football Playoff rankings.

Iowa dropped to No. 5 in the final CFP rankings, two spots ahead of Ohio State. The Rose Bowl, which matches the champions of the Pac-12 and Big Ten, has its choice of another team from one of those conferences if that conference's champion plays in a national semifinal game.

With Big Ten champion Michigan State in one semifinal game, the Rose Bowl opted on Sunday to take Iowa (12-1) over Ohio State (11-1)

Ohio State and Notre Dame, which finished one spot behind the Buckeyes at No. 8, did not play in conference championship games, but will meet Jan. 1.

In another Jan. 1 matchup, Mississippi of the Southeastern Conference and Oklahoma State of the Big 12 will meet in the Sugar Bowl, while the Dec. 31 Peach Bowl features a matchup between Florida State and Houston, the American Athletic Conference champion. Houston (12-1) finished No. 18 in the CFP rankings, and, as the highest ranked team outside of the Notre Dame and the power five conferences, the Cougars earned an automatic berth to one of the six major bowls -- the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, Peach and the two national semifinal games. Clemson will face Oklahoma in one semifinal game, with Michigan State and Alabama facing off in the other. Both games will be on Dec. 31, with the national championship game scheduled for Jan. 11.
