[December 15, 2015]  Donald Trump's Turnberry will no longer host The Open championship amid anger over his controversial remarks, according to The Independent.

The R&A oversees the British Open and has "privately decided" that Trump Turnberry, on the west coast of Scotland, will no longer be part The Open.

After Trump's most recent comments about Muslims, a 2020 British Open at Trump Turnberry is out of the question, according to the report. "2020 will not happen here," the London newspaper quoted an R&A insider as saying. "Turnberry will be back. But perhaps not Trump Turnberry."

Trump, the Manhattan billionaire and leading Republican presidential candidate, first raised the ire of golf's governing bodies in June for his remarks about Mexican illegal immigrants. He was rebuked in a joint statement from the USGA, LPGA, PGA of America and PGA Tour.

Trump's latest stance -- the banning of all Muslim immigrants to the United States -- appears to have changed matters for the R&A, now led by Martin Slumbers.

From The Independent's report:

"Controversial remarks made by Mr. Trump in his campaign for the Republican nomination -- about Muslims, Mexicans, Chinese and women, among others -- have given him a near-pariah status in the global game, raising the risk of a boycott by sponsors and international players. ...

"But his call for a 'total and complete shutdown' of U.S. borders to all Muslims, until, as he claimed, 'our country's representatives figure out what's going on,' appears to have been the final straw for the R&A.

"One member, close to the championship committee, told The Independent about recent discussions: 'One word was thrown around: Enough.'"

Trump bought Turnberry in 2014 from Dubai-based Leisurecorp for a reported just over $63 million. The course has been in the midst of a $250 million renovation.

Turnberry has hosted four British Opens, seven Senior Opens and two Women's Opens.

The most recent British Open at Turnberry was in 2009, when Stewart Cink won a playoff over 59-year-old Tom Watson. The most famous was in 1977 that featured Watson defeating Jack Nicklaus.
