NHL roundup: Jackets outlast Stars

[December 30, 2015]  COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Scott Hartnell scored midway through the third period off a horrendous turnover by Antti Niemi, a goal that sent sealed the Columbus Blue Jackets' 6-3 win over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday in Nationwide Arena.

The Stars were lurking behind the fragile Blue Jackets all night, but their hopes for a comeback seemed to crumble at 9:57 of the third after Niemi's blunder and Hartnell's ensuing score made it 5-3.

Boone Jenner, Matt Calvert, Brandon Saad Rene Bourque and Kevin Connauton also scored for the Blue Jackets, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Brandon Dubinsky and Fedor Tyutin each added two assists, while Curtis McElhinney stopped 39 of 42 shots to earn his second win of the season.

The Stars got goals from Patrick Sharp, Colton Sceviour and Tyler Seguin.

Kari Lehtonen started for Dallas, but was pulled after stopping 11 of 14 shots in the first period. His replacement, Niemi, stopped 16 of 18.
 


Islanders 6, Maple Leafs 3

TORONTO -- The New York Islanders had goals from six different players in the first two periods on their way to a victory over Toronto.

Brock Nelson, John Tavares, Frans Nielsen, Anders Lee, Nikolay Kulemin and Matt Martin each scored a goal for the Islanders, who lost Sunday at home to Toronto. Tavares, Lee and Nielsen also added an assist each.

Brad Boyes, Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau and Shawn Matthias scored for the Maple Leafs. Boyes and Matthias also had an assist while Peter Holland had two assists.

Devils 3, Hurricanes 2

NEWARK, N.J. -- David Schlemko scored with 3:05 remaining to help lift New Jersey over the Carolina at Prudential Center.

Kyle Palmieri scored his 16th goal of the season and Bobby Farnham also scored for the Devils and Keith Kinkaid made 26 saves.

Eric Staal scored twice while Cam Ward stopped 21 shots for the Hurricanes.

Panthers 3, Canadiens 1

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Aleksander Barkov scored two goals and added an assist as Florida closed the best month in franchise history by defeating Montreal at the BB&T Center.

The Panthers also got a second-period, game-winning goal from Jaromir Jagr and 27 saves from Robert Luongo.

Max Pacioretty scored the Habs lone goal.

Bruins 7, Senators 3

BOSTON -- Jimmy Hayes delivered the first hat trick of his NHL career and Patrice Bergeron and Matt Beleskey both scored twice as Boston ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over Ottawa.

Torey Krug, Ryan Spooner and Loui Eriksson had two assists apiece for the Bruins. Krug now has 100 career NHL points.

Chris Neil had a goal and an assist -- his fourth and fifth points of the season -- and Mika Zibanejad and Mike Hoffman (his 18th) also scored for the Senators.

Jets 4, Red Wings 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Jacob Trouba doubled his season output with a pair of goals and Bryan Little added three assists to power Winnipeg over Detroit at the MTS Centre.

Trouba netted his third and fourth goals of the season, while Andrew Ladd supplied his 10th on the power play and Alexander Burmistrov chipped in his third for the Jets. Drew Stafford and Blake Wheeler each had two assists.

Pavel Datsyuk scored his fifth of the season for the Red Wings' lone goal.

Blues 4, Predators 3 (OT)

ST. LOUIS -- Alexander Steen scored 4:01 into overtime to give St. Louis a victory over Nashville.

Dmitij Jaskin, Robby Fabbri and Kevin Shattenkirk also scored for the Blues.

Shea Weber, Colin Wilson and Mattias Ekholm lit the lamp for the Predators.

Ducks 1, Flames 0

CALGARY, Alberta -- John Gibson was forced to make just 14 saves to backstop Anaheim to a win over Calgary at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Shawn Horcoff scored the lone goal of the game for the Ducks, who have won two straight games and have gone 3-1-1 in their past five to get back into playoff contention.

Making his seventh straight start in net for the Flames, Karri Ramo stopped 20 of 21 shots.

Kings 5, Oilers 2

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Jonathan Quick had another vintage night against Edmonton, stopping 42 of 44 shots in Los Angeles' win.

Dwight King, Michael Mersch, Tyler Toffoli, Trevor Lewis and Dustin Brown scored for the Kings.

Benoit Pouliot and Mark Letestu scored for the Oilers.

Blackhawks 7, Coyotes 5

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Patrick Kane recorded his 22nd goal and Andrew Desjardins scored twice in Chicago's victory over Arizona at Gila River Arena.

Duncan Keith, Artem Anisimov, Artemi Panarin and Jonathan Toews also scored for the Blackhawks while Kane added two assists.

Shane Doan had his second career hat trick, and his goal in the final minute was the 379th of his career, tying Dale Hawerchuk's Coyotes' record. Zbynek Michalek and Connor Murphy also scored.
