02/03/2015 MLB Note - Washington Nationals Janssen, Casey

RHP Casey Janssen and the Nationals finalized a one-year, $5 million contract on Feb. 2. The deal includes a mutual option for $7 million in 2016 with a buyout of $1.5 million. Janssen, 33, posted 81 saves and a 2.94 ERA for the Blue Jays the past three years, including 34 saves in 2013 and 25 in 2014. He struggled in the second half of last season after becoming ill during the All-Star break, and he finished with a 3.94 ERA in 45 2/3 innings.

MLB Note - Washington Nationals Fornataro, Eric

RHP Eric Fornataro was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Feb. 2 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly signed RHP Casey Janssen. Fornataro, 27, was acquired from the Cardinals on a waiver claim in November. In eight major league games in 2014, Fornataro went 0-0 with a 4.66 ERA.

MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Belisario, Ronald

RHP Ronald Belisario signed a minor league contract with the Rays on Jan. 30 and received an invitation to the team's major league spring camp. Belisario, 32, struggled last season with the White Sox, posting a 4-8 record with eight saves while giving up 46 runs in 66 1/3 innings for a 5.56 ERA. However, he had a 3.24 ERA and a 13-8 record in 139 innings during the 2012 and 2013 seasons with the Dodgers.

MLB Note - Cincinnati Reds Maholm, Paul

LHP Paul Maholm signed a minor league contract with the Reds on Feb. 2 and was invited to the team's major league spring camp. Maholm, 32, had a rough 2014 season with the. He went 1-5 with a 4.84 ERA in 30 games (eight starts) before sustaining a torn ACL in his right knee on Aug. 1. Maholm subsequently underwent season-ending surgery. In his 10-year career, including seven seasons in Pittsburgh, he is 77-100 with a 4.30 ERA. He also has pitched for the Cubs and Braves. The Reds have two open spots in their rotation after trading RHP Mat Latos to Miami and RHP Alfredo Simon to Detroit.

MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Casilla, Alexi

INF Alexi Casilla signed a minor league deal with the Rays on Feb. 2 and was invited to the team's major league spring camp. Casilla, 30, appeared in one major league game for Baltimore last year, going 0-for-4. He batted .264/.315/.320 with one homer and 19 RBIs in 56 games for Triple-A Norfolk. In nine major league seasons, the first seven with the Twins, Casilla has a .247/.302/.331 batting line with 12 homers, 157 RBIs and 80 steals in 578 games.

MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Laird, Gerald

C Gerald Laird and the Diamondbacks agreed to a minor league deal on Feb. 2, and the veteran was invited to the team's major league spring camp. The Diamondbacks have an open competition at catcher after trading Miguel Montero this offseason. Laird, 35, is expected to compete for a roster spot with Tuffy Gosewisch and Oscar Hernandez. Laird, 35, has a .244/.305/.353 career hitting line in 12 seasons with the Rangers, Tigers, Cardinals and Braves. He hit .204/.275/.257 with no homers and 10 RBIs in 53 games with Atlanta last season.

MLB Note - San Francisco Giants Belt, Brandon

1B Brandon Belt and the Giants avoided arbitration, agreeing to a one-year, $3.6 million contract on Feb. 2. Belt, 26, originally filed for $4.5 million in arbitration, while the Giants countered with a $3 million offer. In 61 games last season, Belt hit .243/.306/.449 with 12 home runs and 27 RBIs.

MLB Note - New York Mets Duda, Lucas

1B Lucas Duda and the Mets avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $4.2 million salary for 2015 on Feb. 2. Duda filed for $4.7 million, and the Mets offered $3.75 million before the sides agreed to the one-year deal. Duda, 29, played in a career-high 153 games in 2014, batting .253/.349/.481 with 27 doubles, 30 home runs, 74 runs and 92 RBIs.
