02/12/2015 MLB Note - Milwaukee Brewers Lucroy, Jonathan

C Jonathan Lucroy could miss up to six weeks due to a strained right hamstring, meaning he could miss nearly all of spring training. The Brewers open the regular season April 6, but Lucroy could be rested all the way through spring training. The team said he plans to hit and throw but not run.

Lucroy, 28, was fourth in National League Most Valuable Player voting in 2014, but he ended the season with hamstring issues. The Brewers said in January that there are plans to use Lucroy at first base against some left-handed pitchers. If the "mild" hamstring issue persists, he could get more time in the infield rather than behind the plate.

MLB Note - San Diego Padres Shields, James

RHP James Shields secured the richest free agent contract in Padres history on Feb. 11 when he signed a four-year, $75 million contract. Shields pitched last season for Kansas City when the Royals reached the World Series, but he refused their $15.3 million qualifying offer. The deal with the Padres includes an option for 2019.

San Diego is banking on Shields to remain a workhorse. The 33-year-old veteran pitched at least 200 innings each of the past eight seasons, and he topped 225 innings each of the past four seasons. He was a double-digit winner in all eight years, averaging 33 starts. Shields had a 14-8 record with a 3.21 ERA, 180 strikeouts and just 44 walks in 227 innings for the Royals last season. He lost both of his starts in the World Series against the Giants, and he wound up 1-2 with a 6.12 ERA in five 2014 playoff starts.

MLB Note - San Diego Padres Northcraft, Aaron

RHP Aaron Northcraft was designated for assignment by the Padres on Feb. 11 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly signed RHP James Shields. Northcraft, 24, was acquired by San Diego along with OF Justin Upton in the December deal that sent 2B Jace Peterson, LHP Max Fried, 3B Dustin Peterson and CF Mallex Smith to the Braves. Northcraft went a combined 7-10 with a 4.70 ERA in a combined 26 games (24 starts) in Double-A and Triple-A last year.

MLB Note - Cincinnati Reds Dominguez, Chris

INF/OF Chris Dominguez, released by the Giants on Feb. 4, signed a minor league deal with the Reds a week later. Cincinnati invited him to its major league spring camp. Dominguez, 28, made his major league debut last season, going 1-for-17 (.059) with a homer and two RBIs in eight games for San Francisco. He spent the bulk of the season with Triple-A Fresno, hitting .274/.307/.460 with 21 homers and 85 RBIs in 131 games.

MLB Note - Washington Nationals Blevins, Jerry

LHP Jerry Blevins won his arbitration case, and he will receive $2.4 million this season. The Nationals were offering him $2.2 million. Blevins, 31, went 2-3 with a 4.87 ERA in 57 1/3 innings as a reliever last season, striking out 66 and walking 23. He is expected to pitch in the late innings this season.

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Clippard, Tyler

OF Tyler Clippard and the A's avoided arbitration, reaching agreement on a one-year, $8.3 million contract Feb. 11. Clippard requested $8.85 million, and Oakland offered $7,775,000 during the exchange of arbitration figures in January. Clippard, traded to the A's from the Nationals in mid-January for INF Yunel Escobar, could start the season as a closer for the A's while LHP Sean Doolittle is sidelined with a rotator cuff injury. Last season for the Nationals, Clippard appeared in 70 games and posted a 7-4 record with one save, 40 holds and a 2.18 ERA.

MLB Note - Cleveland Indians Martinez, Michael

INF Michael Martinez signed a minor league contract with the Indians on Feb. 11 and received a non-roster invitation to spring training. Martinez, 32, appeared in 26 games for the Pirates in 2014, hitting .128/.209/.154 with two RBIs. He is a career .181/.231/.251 hitter in 188 games at the major league level.

MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Colabello, Chris

1B Chris Colabello, designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Feb. 4, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo a week later. Colabello, 31, was claimed off waivers by Toronto from Minnesota in December. He hit .229/.282/.380 with six homers and 39 RBIs in 50 games for the Twins last season. He batted .268/.336/.469 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs in 61 games for Triple-A Rochester in 2014.

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Duffy, Danny

LHP Danny Duffy and the Royals agreed to a one-year, $2,425,000 deal on Feb. 6, avoiding arbitration. Duffy, 26, asked for a $3 million salary when figures were exchanged, and the team offered him $1.75 million. Last season, Duffy went 9-12 with a 2.53 ERA in 31 regular-season games (25 starts) while earning $526,000. In three postseason relief outings, he went 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA.
