02/16/2015 MLB Note - Retired Player Giambi, Jason

DH Jason Giambi, a one-time MVP whose career was tainted by a performance-enhancing-drug scandal, announced his retirement Feb. 16. Giambi became a star with the Athletics in the late 1990s, turning into one of baseball's best sluggers. From 1998 to 2003, he averaged 37 home runs per year. In 2000, he was named American League MVP after hitting 43 homers and driving in 137 runs while batting .333. He later played for the Yankees, A's (again), Rockies and Indians. In 20 seasons, he batted .277/.399/.516 with 440 home runs, 1,441 RBIs and 405 doubles.

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Zito, Barry

LHP Barry Zito will try to resurrect his career at the place where it began. The 36-year-old left-hander, who did not pitch last year, agreed to a minor league deal with Oakland on Feb. 16. Zito will receive an invitation to the Athletics' major league spring camp, which opens Feb. 19 for pitchers and catchers. According to several media reports, Zito would make a $1 million salary if he is on the major league roster, with the opportunity for an additional $175,000 in incentives.

Zito sat out last season after completing his seven-year, $126 million deal with the Giants. In his most recent big league action, Zito went 5-11 with a 5.74 ERA in 30 games (25 starts) in 2013.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Richards, Garrett

RHP Garrett Richards threw a successful bullpen session Feb. 16, his first mound work since undergoing knee surgery last August. Pitching coach Mike Butcher watched Richards' session in Tempe, Ariz., and he told reporters that Richards "looked good, felt good." Angels pitchers and catchers will hold their first official workout Feb. 20, but the timetable for Richards' next mound appearance is uncertain. Richards, 26, resumed full-weight running in early February, then received clearance to pitch off a mound. He would like to be back in action by Opening Day, but it is possible he won't return until later in April.
