[January 02, 2015]  Jan 1 (The Sports Xchange) - The Toronto Maple Leafs placed left winger Joffrey Lupul on injured reserve and called up forward Greg McKegg from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on Thursday.

Lupul returned to Toronto for additional tests after sustaining a lower body injury during the second period of Wednesday night's game against the Boston Bruins.

Lupul has played in 26 games this season and has nine goals and eight assists.

The Maple Leafs also announced that center Peter Holland was going back to Toronto for further evaluation of an upper body injury. Holland has seen action in 38 games this season and has eight goals and eight assists.

The 22-year-old McKegg has played in 23 games for the Marlies this season and has seven goals and eight assists. He made his NHL debut for Maple Leafs in February.

Boston Bruins forward Matt Lindblad and defenseman Zach Trotman were assigned to Providence of the American Hockey League on Thursday.

Lindblad has played in two games for the Bruins this season and three times in his career. In 29 games for Providence this season, Lindblad has six goals and six assists.

Trotman has seen action in 17 games for Boston this season and has four assists. In eight games for Providence this season, he has two assists.

The St. Louis Blues recalled forwards Colin Fraser and John McCarthy from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League.

Fraser, 29, signed as a free agent Sept. 5 and has 12 points and 28 penalty minutes in 32 games for the Wolves this season. McCarthy, 28, signed as a free agent on July 8 and has seven points and 11 penalty minutes in 22 games for the Wolves.

The Minnesota Wild reassigned forward Tyler Graovac to Iowa of the American Hockey League on Thursday.

The 21-year-old Graovac played in two games for the Wild after he was recalled Sunday, making his NHL debut on Monday. In 31 games for Iowa this season, he has 12 goals and 12 assists.

Chicago Blackhawks right winger Kris Versteeg appeared to injure his left hand diving to block a shot and was taken to the locker room by trainers early in the third period of the Winter Classic game against the Washington Capitals on Thursday.

Versteeg immediately headed to the bench after taking a hard shot off the hand by Capitals left winger Eric Fehr, who scored the game's first goal.

Versteeg was evaluated by team trainers on the bench for a few minutes before being taken to the dressing room with a towel on the hand and the score tied 2-2.

His status was uncertain. Versteeg has appeared in 33 games this season and has nine goals and 18 assists.

The Buffalo Sabres assigned defenseman Mark Pysyk to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. Pysyk was in his second stint with the Sabres this season.

The organization's first-round pick in the 2010 draft, Pysyk has 13 points in 67 career games for the Sabres since making his NHL debut in 2012, including one point in four games this season. For the Amerks, he has 11 points in 30 games.
