LINCOLN - In an effort to improve
public works operations, the City Council approved Lincoln’s Snow
and Ice Control Plan for the 2014-2015 winter season. City
Administrator Clay Johnson and Street Superintendent Walt Landers
crafted a plan to formally inventory the City of Lincoln’s snow
control equipment, identify main and secondary routes, and outline
techniques for keeping Lincoln’s streets and sidewalks safe during a
winter event.

“Winter storms can become chaotic for everyone involved,” said
Johnson. “With a defined plan in place, our personnel are better
able to address our city’s routes with an appropriate response.”
While the Snow and Ice Control Plan is for city operations, it is
also an informational document that educates residents on what to do
and where it is safe to drive during snow and ice accumulations. A
map included with the document illustrates the best routes to travel
during snow. According to the plan, during heavier snow
accumulations, routes identified as “mains” will be cleaned first
with “secondary” routes to follow. Roads identified as state routes
are not the responsibility of the City.
The Snow and Ice Control Plan is also a living document. Prior to
each winter season, the City will inventory its snow and ice control
measures to make sure Lincoln personnel are performing their best
during inclement weather.
