[January 08, 2015]  Jan 7 (The Sports Xchange) - The Toronto Maple Leafs named Peter Horachek as the team's interim head coach on Wednesday.

General manager David Nonis said Steve Staios, Toronto's manager of player development, will support the coaching staff on the bench and in practice.

On Tuesday, coach Randy Carlyle was fired by the Leafs, who are fourth in the Atlantic Division at 21-16-3.

The Maple Leafs recalled center Sam Carrick from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.

The Leafs also assigned forward Carter Ashton to the Marlies.

Florida Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck and Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist were fined $2,000 by the NHL for diving.

In accordance with NHL Rule 64, players or teams who repeatedly dive and embellish in an attempt to draw penalties are assessed a warning and then fines.

Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Steve Mason left practice early and was planning to have an MRI on Wednesday.

Mason and the Flyers did not disclose the injury, but general manager Ron Hextall said it wasn't related to the back injury that sidelined Mason last month.

The Calgary Flames assigned Finnish-born center Markus Granlund and defenseman Corey Potter to the Adirondack Flames of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.

The Flames also activated center Mikael Backlund and defenseman Ladislav Smid from injured reserve.

The Minnesota Wild sent forward Brett Sutter back to Iowa of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Sutter played in three games for the Wild after he was recalled from Iowa on Dec. 28 and had two assists in a game at Winnipeg on Dec. 29. In five games for the Wild this season, Sutter has three assists and a plus-1 rating. (Editing by Andrew Both)
