[January 10, 2015]  BLOOMINGTON – Miller Park Zoo’s naming contest for the new female Red Wolf has concluded and the winning name is… Kawoni, which is Cherokee for Flower Moon, or April, which is her birth month.

Voters were given several choices from an online survey on Miller Park Zoo’s Facebook page. The second place name was Tacoma, her birthplace, and the third place name was Waya, Cherokee for wolf.

Kawoni joins the two-and-a-half-year-old male Elohi (Cherokee for “of the earth”) who came from Chehaw Wild Animal Park in Albany, Georgia. Kawoni arrived from Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington.
