01/13/2015 MLB Note - Texas Rangers Peguero, Carlos

OF Carlos Peguero signed a minor league contract with the Rangers on Jan. 13, and he received an invitation to spring training. The 27-year-old was with the Royals in 2014 but spent a majority of the year in Triple-A, where he belted 30 home runs and batted .266/.349/.563 in 104 games. In four games and nine at-bats for the Royals, he hit .222 with one RBI. In 69 career games in the big leagues with the Royals and Mariners, Peguero has a .196/.245/.379 batting line with nine home runs and 28 RBIs.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Ellis, A.J.

C A.J. Ellis and the Dodgers reached agreement on a one-year, $4.25 million contract on Jan. 13, avoiding arbitration. Ellis received a $700,000 raise despite batting a career-low .191 last season with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 93 games while battling a knee injury and a sprained ankle. Ellis is expected to be the backup catcher in 2015 behind Yasmani Grandal, who was acquired in the offseason from the San Diego Padres. Ellis is considered a clubhouse leader and has the support of Dodgers ace LHP Clayton Kershaw.

MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Lopez, Yoan

RHP Yoan Lopez agreed to a deal with the Diamondbacks on Jan. 13, getting an $8.27 million signing bonus that is a record for an international free agent under 23 years old. Lopez, 21, was pursued heavily. The Dodgers, Yankees and Padres made offers to the right-hander, who is likely to be invited to spring training with the Diamondbacks. Lopez, who spent three seasons in Cuba's top pro league, showed off a 95 mph fastball in workouts for teams in November. Major League Baseball confirmed his free agency status before the workout.

MLB Note - Atlanta Braves Rodriguez, Wandy

LHP Wandy Rodriguez and the Braves agreed to a minor league contract on Jan. 13, and he received an invitation to spring training. The 35-year-old was ready to sign with the Phillies several earlier, but the deal fell through after Rodriguez reportedly failed a physical. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the deal with the Braves would be worth $2 million if Rodriguez makes the major league roster. Because of injuries, Rodriguez made only six starts last year and 12 starts in 2013 for the Pirates. He posted a 0-2 record with a 6.75 ERA in 26 2/3 innings in 2014 and was 6-4 with a 3.59 ERA in 62 2/3 innings the previous year.

MLB Note - New York Yankees Germen, Gonzalez

RHP Gonzalez Germen was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Jan. 13 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired RHP Chris Martin. Germen, 27, was acquired by the Yankees from the Mets in a cash deal in December. In 25 relief appearances with the Mets last season, Germen had no decisions, a 4.75 ERA and a 1.451 WHIP in 30 1/3 innings.

MLB Note - New York Yankees Martin, Chris

RHP Chris Martin was acquired by the Yankees from the Rockies on Jan. 13 in exchange for cash considerations. Martin, 28, pitched 16 games in relief last season for the Rockies in his first major league action and had a 0-0 record with a 6.89 ERA. He also worked in 25 games for Triple-A Colorado Springs and went 1-3 with a 4.39 ERA. In 126 career minor league appearances from 2010 to 2014, Martin has a 19-14 record with 14 saves and a 3.09 ERA.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Krauss, Marc

1B/OF Marc Krauss, designated for assignment by the Angels on Jan. 8, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Jan. 13. Krauss, 27, was claimed off waivers by the Angels from the Astros on Dec. 8. He hit .194/.279/.323 with six homers and 21 RBIs in 67 games for Houston last year. He batted .289/.375/.459 with five homers and 38 RBIs in 42 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
