[January 17, 2015]  Jan 16 (The Sports Xchange) - Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand was suspended for two games on Friday for slew-footing New York Rangers forward Derick Brassard during the second period of Thursday night's game in Boston.

Marchand will miss Saturday's home game against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tuesday's game in Dallas against the Stars.

The suspension, Marchand's second for slew-footing in his career, will cost him $48,387.10.

The New York Rangers and defenseman Marc Staal are closing in on a six-year contract extension, according to reports Friday.

ESPN.com reported the contract is expected to have an average annual value of $5.7 million.

Staal, 28, would have been an unrestricted free agent July 1. He has one goal and seven points in 41 games this season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled defenseman Luke Witkowski from Syracuse of the American Hockey League and assigned forward Vladislav Namestnikov to the Crunch on Friday.

Witkowski, 24, has six points and 75 penalty minutes in 36 games for Syracuse this season.

Namestnikov, 22, has three goals and seven points in 25 games for the Lightning. (Editing by Gene Cherry)
