01/18/2015 MLB Note - Milwaukee Brewers Gallardo, Yovani

RHP Yovani Gallardo likely will pitch his final year before free agency as a Ranger. Fox Sports and ESPN reported Jan. 18 that the Brewers were on the verge of trading the veteran to Texas. Details of the deal were not known. Gallardo, 28, will make $13 million in the final year of his contract in 2015 after the Brewers picked up his option in November. The option was part of a five-year, $30 million contract he signed in 2010. ESPN cited a source who said that the Fort Worth, Texas, high school product would be open to re-signing with the Rangers before becoming a free agent.

Last season, Gallardo went 8-11 with a career-best 3.51 ERA in 192 1/3 innings and 32 starts. Over eight major league seasons, all with Milwaukee, Gallardo has an 89-64 record with a 3.69 ERA in 214 games (211 starts).

He hit .311/.372/.409 with two homers, 15 RBIs and 26 stolen bases in 57 games for Triple-A Syracuse before he was claimed off waivers by the Yankees from the Nationals in September.

MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Kawasaki, Munenori

INF Munenori Kawasaki, outrighted off the Blue Jays' 40-man roster on Oct. 1, re-signed with the Toronto organization on Jan. 16. He received a minor league deal and was invited to spring training. Kawasaki, 33, hit .258/.327/.296 with no homers and 17 RBIs in 82 games for Toronto last year.

MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Lopez, Yoan

RHP Yoan Lopez finalized a minor league contract with the Diamondbacks on Jan. 16, getting an $8.27 million signing bonus that is a record for an international free agent under 23 years old. Lopez was pursued heavily. The Dodgers, Yankees and Padres made offers to the 21-year-old, who is likely to be invited to spring training with the Diamondbacks. Lopez, who spent three seasons in Cuba's top pro league, showed off a 95 mph fastball in workouts for teams in November. Major League Baseball confirmed his free agency status before the workout.

MLB Note - No MLB Team Free Agents Scherzer, Max

RHP Max Scherzer is close to signing with the Nationals, according to The Washington Post. Nationals beat writer Adam Kilgore tweeted Sunday, "Per a source, Max Scherzer to the Nats is 'very close.' Not finished yet."

Multiple sources are reporting that other teams are still in the running for the 30-year-old Scherzer, who was 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA and 252 strikeouts in 220 1/3 innings for the Detroit Tigers last season after winning the 2013 American League Cy Young Award. For his career, Scherzer is 91-50 with a 3.58 ERA in two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the last five with the Tigers. He made the All-Star team in each of the past two seasons. Scherzer rejected a six-year, $144 million offer from the Tigers last spring and is reportedly set to sign on for seven years within days.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Bard, Daniel

RHP Daniel Bard agreed to a one-year, minor league contract with the Cubs on Jan. 18 and received an invitation to spring training. If Bard makes the major league club, his base salary reportedly would be $1 million plus incentives based on appearances. He would likely be used as a reliever. Bard, 29, pitched in 211 games with the Red Sox from 2009-13, posting a 3.67 ERA over 257 1/3 innings. Because of an arm injury, he made just four appearances with the Rangers' Class A Hickory team last year before he was released.
