01/22/2015 MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Rodriguez, Henry

RHP Henry Rodriguez signed a minor league contract with the Diamondbacks, according to a CBSSports.com report on Jan. 22. The hard-throwing Rodriguez made just two appearances in the major leagues last year, allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings for the Marlins. The 28-year-old has 151 strikeouts and a 4.31 ERA in 150 1/3 career innings with the Athletics, Nationals, Cubs and Marlins.

MLB Note - Atlanta Braves Gomes, Jonny

OF Jonny Gomes and the Braves agreed on a one-year contract reportedly worth $4 million on Jan. 22. With LF Justin Upton and RF Jason Heyward traded, Gomes is expected to share time in left field with Zoilo Almonte in 2015. Gomes, 34, hit just .234/.327/.330 last season with the Red Sox and Athletics. In 12 seasons, he has a .244/.335/.442 hitting line with 155 home runs for Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Washington, Boston and Oakland.

MLB Note - No MLB Team Free Agents Santana, Johan

LHP Johan Santana's plans for a comeback hit a snag in the Venezuelan winter league. The veteran free agent left-hander threw two perfect innings for Magallanes in mid-January, then left the game due to shoulder soreness. It was Santana's first game action of the winter. According to the Venezuelan league's website, Santana underwent an MRI exam that found no structural damage to his shoulder. Santana, 35, last pitched in a U.S. pro game in 2012, when he made 21 starts for the Mets. He missed all of the 2011 and 2013 seasons due to shoulder injuries that led to multiple surgeries. While rehabbing last June under a minor league contract with the Orioles, Santana tore his left Achilles tendon and was sidelined for the rest of the 2014 season.

MLB Note - Chicago White Sox Penny, Brad

RHP Brad Penny signed a minor league deal with the White Sox on Jan. 22 and was invited to the team's major league spring camp. Penny, 36, revived his career last year after three years out of the majors. He went 2-1 with a 6.58 ERA in eight games (four starts) for the Marlins in 2014. In 14 major league seasons with six teams, Penny has a career 121-101 record and a 4.29 ERA in 349 games (319 starts).

MLB Note - Chicago White Sox Soto, Geovany

C Geovany Soto signed a minor league deal with the White Sox on Jan. 22 and was invited to the team's major league spring camp. Soto hit .250/.302/.363 with one homer and 11 RBIs in a combined 24 games for Texas and Oakland in 2014, missing most of the season due to injuries. He was the Rookie of the Year for the Cubs in 2008, when he posted career-best offensive numbers: .285/.364/.504 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Santos, Sergio

RHP Sergio Santos signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers on Jan. 8 and received an invitation to spring training. Santos' $6 million option was declined by the Blue Jays on Nov. 1, making him a free agent. Santos, 31, had five saves for Toronto early in the 2014 season. He finished 0-3 with an 8.57 ERA in 26 outings.

MLB Note - Chicago White Sox Carroll, Scott

RHP Scott Carroll, non-tendered by the White Sox on Dec. 2, re-signed with the organization on Jan. 22, receiving a minor league deal and an invitation to spring training. Carroll, 30, went 5-10 with a 4.80 ERA in 26 games (19 starts) as a rookie for Chicago last year.

MLB Note - Atlanta Braves Johnson, Kelly

INF Kelly Johnson agreed to a minor league deal with the Braves on Jan. 22, and he received an invitation to the team's major league spring camp. Johnson, 33, played for three AL East teams last year -- the Yankees, Red Sox and Orioles -- and hit a combined .215/.296/.362 with seven homers and 27 RBIs in 106 games. Over nine major league seasons for seven teams, Johnson has a career .250/.333/.423 hitting line with 131 homers and 469 RBIs in 1,157 games.
