Lincoln College fine arts students receive special gift
Elmore builds, donates ‘historic’ table

[January 24, 2015]  LINCOLN - When Lincoln College jazz studies major Cody Garretson mentioned to his grandfather that the fine arts building needed a new table in the lobby where the students gather to practice and do homework, Maury Elmore knew just what to do. The retired Lincoln-area contractor built one. On Thursday afternoon Elmore presented the table to Fine Arts Department Chair Scott Woger and it was placed in the Johnston Center. In addition to being hand-made, the table is unique because the top is built from boards that were salvaged from the old Lincoln Depot.

“I mentioned to a friend that I was going to build a table for the JC for the music students, and a friend said he had some boards from the Depot I could use. I thought it would be nice because the Depot is historic, and the College is a historic part of Lincoln, too,” said Elmore.

The boards had to be stripped of paint and years of built-up dirt, then sanded and completely refinished.

“I think they’re birch, but I’m not sure. It’s all good hardwood, though, so it should last a long time,” said Elmore.

Several music students were present when the table was delivered. They all expressed their appreciation to Elmore for the special gift and didn’t waste any time putting it to good use.
