[July 03, 2015]  ATLANTA -- Cameron Maybin chopped a single over the third base bag with one out in the ninth inning to drive in the winning run and give the Atlanta Braves a 2-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Thursday night.

The Braves started the rally when pinch hitter Pedro Ciriaco beat out an infield grounder to shortstop, only the fourth hit against Washington starter Max Scherzer. Ciriaco went to second on a sacrifice and scored on Maybin's single.

Scherzer (9-6) had his three-game winning streak snapped. He allowed five hits and struck out nine in 8 1/3 innings.

Atlanta starter Manny Banuelos, making his first appearance in the major leagues, was in control until leaving in the sixth inning due to cramps and dehydration. In 5 2/3 scoreless innings, he struck out seven.

Indians 5, Rays 4 (10 innings)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Mike Aviles sent the first pitch of the 10th inning over the wall in left field, giving Cleveland a win over Tampa Bay.

The Indians completed a four-game sweep of the Rays, who hadn't been swept in a four-game series since September 2009 at the New York Yankees.

Indians starter Corey Kluber struck out 14, his second-highest total of the season. He left after eight innings with the game tied 4-4.

Marlins 5, Giants 4

MIAMI -- Jose Fernandez, returning to the mound for the first time in nearly 14 months, homered and pitched six innings as Miami swept San Francisco.

Fernandez (1-0) -- who hadn't pitched since May 9, 2014, due to Tommy John surgery -- allowed seven hits and no walks, striking out six.

His solo home run in the fifth inning sparked a four-run rally. Justin Bour, who has homered in three straight games, followed with a three-run shot later in the inning to give Miami a 5-3 lead.

Cubs 6, Mets 1

NEW YORK -- Jake Arrieta threw eight strong innings and Jonathan Herrera hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs as Chicago completed a three-game sweep of New York.

The Cubs won all seven games this season against the Mets, the first time Chicago has swept New York in a season. Chicago won four in a row against the Mets at Wrigley Field, May 11-14.

The Mets scored just one run in 29 innings in being swept at home for the first time since Aug. 12-14, 2014, by the Washington Nationals. New York has scored two runs or fewer in 12 of its last 14 games.

Pirates 8, Tigers 4

DETROIT -- Francisco Liriano blanked Detroit on five hits in seven innings and Pittsburgh swept a three-game interleague series.

Liriano (5-6) was 1-9 against Detroit in his previous 14 appearances but mixed fastballs and offspeed pitches to avoid any damage. He walked three and struck out five.

Neil Walker had four hits and drove in three runs for Pittsburgh, and Andrew McCutcheon drove in two. J.D. Martinez hit a three-run home run for Detroit.

Rangers 2, Orioles 0

BALTIMORE -- Leonys Martin and Rougned Odor hit RBI singles in the ninth inning, and Texas beat Baltimore to take three of four games in the series.

Rangers right-hander Yovani Gallardo extended his scoreless streak to 29 1/3 innings, the fourth longest in franchise history. He threw six innings of two-hit ball while striking out two and walking three. He has not given up a run since June 10 against the Oakland A's.

Keone Kela (5-5) picked up the win after facing one batter and inducing an inning-ending double play in the eighth. Shawn Tolleson earned his 12th save with a perfect ninth.

Brewers 8, Phillies 7 (11 innings)

PHILADELPHIA -- Adam Lind singled home the winning run in the 11th inning, and Milwaukee completed a four-game sweep of Philadelphia.

The Brewers blew a 7-4 lead in the seventh inning before pulling out their fifth consecutive victory.

With one out in the 11th, Lind hit a first-pitch fastball from Luis Garcia into center field to score Jonathan Lucroy, who led off the inning with a double. Lucroy and Jean Segura each had three hits for Milwaukee.

Red Sox 12, Blue Jays 6

TORONTO -- David Ortiz hit a three-run homer and Hanley Ramirez added a solo blast in an eight-run first inning as Boston defeated Toronto.

Brock Holt and Xander Bogaerts each had four hits for Boston.

Twins 2, Royals 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kyle Gibson pitched eight scoreless innings as Minnesota blanked Kansas City. The first-place Royals lost their four straight, matching their season high.

Gibson (6-6) limited the Royals to four hits, all singles. He walked four and struck out seven.

Danny Santana's RBI triple in the fifth inning knocked in the game's first run. It was Santana's first extra-base hit since May 20. The Twins added a run in the ninth on an Eduardo Escobar triple.

Padres 5, Cardinals 3 (11 innings)

ST. LOUIS -- Pinch hitter Will Venable crushed a two-run, 11th-inning homer to give San Diego a win over St. Louis.

Clint Barmes reached with two outs in the 11th on a ground-rule double down the right field line. The ball was originally ruled foul, but the call was overturned by replay officials in New York City.

Venable then jumped on the first pitch from Carlos Villanueva (3-3) for his sixth homer of the season as San Diego started a 10-game road trip by handing St. Louis its third consecutive loss.

Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 1

PHOENIX -- A.J. Pollock homered, and Jeremy Hellickson gave up one run and three hits in seven innings in Arizona's victory over Colorado.

Pollock's homer leading off the sixth inning tied the score at 1. David Peralta hit a two-out, two-run triple off Chris Rusin later in the inning after Nolan Arenado committed an error, his first of two in the game.

Arizona's Yasmany Tomas and Aaron Hill hit two-run, seventh-inning doubles off Scott Oberg.

Athletics 4, Mariners 0

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Scott Kazmir allowed two hits over eight shutout innings, Marcus Semien homered, and Oakland topped Seattle.

Kazmir struck out seven, including four straight at one point, and was perfect until Franklin Gutierrez doubled with one out in the fifth. He didn't walk a batter. Kazmir (5-5) improved to 5-0 against teams in the American League West.

The A's, who beat the Mariners for just the second time in seven games this season, scored all four runs on two-out hits. Josh Pheley had a two-run double in the first, Semien a solo home run in the fifth and rookie Mark Canha an RBI triple in the seventh, his first career triple.
