[July 08, 2015]  July 7 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's Major League Baseball games:

Cubs 7, Cardinals 4 (first game)

First baseman Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-3 with his team-leading 16th home run to help lead the Chicago Cubs to a victory over the St Louis Cardinals in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Dexter Fowler, Chris Denorfia and starting pitcher Jake Arrieta had two hits apiece as the Cubs snapped a four-game losing streak against the Cardinals.

The right-handed Arrieta (9-5) won his fifth game in his last seven starts, allowing two runs and seven hits, striking out four and walking two.

Cubs 5, Cardinals 3 (second game)

The Cubs took advantage of a Cardinals error for a go-ahead run as they scored three times in the seventh inning en route to a victory and a doubleheader sweep

With the game tied 2-2 in the seventh, relief pitcher Kevin Siegrist fielded a grounder and threw the ball into center field to allow the go-ahead run to score.

St Louis fell to 54-30 while Chicago improved to 46-37.

Royals 9, Rays 5 (first game)

Rookie right fielder Paulo Orlando hit a walk-off grand slam in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

Tampa Bay had tied the game in the top of the seventh before the Royals delivered the final blow.

Royals 7, Rays 1 (second game)

Alcides Escobar hit a bases-clearing double to break a sixth-inning tie, and Alex Gordon went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs, lifting the Royals (48-33) to victory over the Rays (43-43) and a doubleheader sweep.

Gordon went 7-for-9, including a solo homer in the first game, with six RBIs in the two games.

Reds 5, Nationals 0

Johnny Cueto threw a two-hit shutout, Joey Votto finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Washington Nationals.

Cueto (6-5), one of five Final Vote candidates for the National League All-Star team, certainly helped his cause as he struck out a season-high 11 batters

Washington (46-38) starter Max Scherzer (9-7) endured his shortest outing of the season -- allowing five runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings -- one day after being named to the All-Star team.

Red Sox 4, Marlins 3

Xander Bogaerts, one of the five players eligible to be the last addition to the American League All-Star team via fan voting, delivered a three-run single in the seventh inning to lead Boston past Miami.

The win was the third straight, the seventh in the last nine games and eighth in the last 11 for the last-place Red Sox (40-45).

Indians 2, Astros 0

Michael Brantley had three hits, including a home run, and Corey Kluber pitched into the seventh inning to earn his first win in more than a month as the Cleveland Indians beat the Houston Astros.

Kluber (4-9) struck out seven for his first win since May 28 for Cleveland (39-44). Houston fell to 49-37.

Athletics 4, Yankees 3 (10 innings)

Third baseman Brett Lawrie led off the top of the 10th inning with a home run, lifting the Oakland Athletics to a victory over the New York Yankees.

Lawrie's big hit gave Oakland (39-47) their 14th win in 22 games and 13th win in the last 17 meetings with the Yankees (44-39).

Twins 8, Orioles 3

Miguel Sano had two hits, including his first Major League home run, and reached base three times as the Minnesota Twins won over the Baltimore Orioles.

The Twins (45-39) will go for the three-game sweep of the Orioles (43-41) on Wednesday.

Braves 4, Brewers 3

A.J. Pierzynski had three hits, including his sixth home run of the season, and Manny Banuelos earned his first career victory as the Atlanta Braves beat the Milwaukee Brewers.

Catcher Pierzynski's effort against Milwaukee helped pick up the left-handed Banuelos (1-0), who allowed five hits and walked three but was charged with only one run in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Angels 10, Rockies 2

The Los Angeles Angels made quick work of Colorado starter Chad Bettis and blasted the Rockies.

Albert Pujols and Mike Trout hit three-run homers, Chris Iannetta hit a two-run shot and Matt Joyce hit a solo homer as the Angels (45-38) built a 10-0 lead and knocked Bettis out after 2 1/3 innings.

Blue Jays 2, White Sox 1

Felix Doubront made the most of his tryout as a starting pitcher, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox.

Doubront (1-0) got the win after allowing just one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of his first start since last September with the Chicago Cubs.

Toronto improved to 44-42.

Pirates 3, Padres 2

Gregory Polanco tripled home the winning run in the eighth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the San Diego Padres for their fourth straight victory.

The Pirates (49-34) moved within 4 1/2 games of the division-leading St Louis Cardinals in the National League Central. The Padres (39-47) lost their fourth straight game.

Mariners 7, Tigers 6 (11 innings)

Robinson Cano ended a night of homers by singling in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Seattle Mariners a win over the Detroit Tigers.

All of the runs, except for the last one, were scored on a homer.

Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Avila, Nick Castellanos and Marc Krauss, who was making his Tigers debut, all homered for Detroit (42-41). Seattle (39-45) got home runs from Jackson, Franklin Gutierrez and Cano.

Giants 3, Mets 0

Right fielder Hunter Pence returned from the disabled list with a splash, contributing two RBIs and a diving catch in the sixth inning to help the San Francisco Giants to a victory over the New York Mets.

Matt Cain, in just his second start following a lengthy DL stint of his own, shut out the Mets on two hits over six innings as the Giants ended a seven-game losing streak.

Both teams are now 43-42.

Phillies 7, Dodgers 2

Chad Billingsley pitched six solid innings, sparking the Philadelphia Phillies to a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jeff Francoeur homered and had three RBIs and Ben Revere drove in two more runs for the Phillies (29-57), who won for only the second time in the last nine games.
