[July 14, 2015]  (Reuters) - One person was killed and half-dozen others were reported missing late on Monday in flash flooding triggered by heavy rain in Kentucky, local media said.

The male victim drowned after getting out of his car on a flooded road in Flat Gap, Johnson County, about 125 miles east of Lexington, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

As many as six people, including one child, were unaccounted for after widespread flash flooding hit the county, the Herald-Leader and WKYT reported.

Search and rescue efforts were under way, an employee with the Paintsville/Johnson County Emergency Management Office said.

She could not immediately confirm the number of people reported missing.

A new round of severe weather capable of damaging winds, tornadoes and large hail was expected to hit the state overnight and early on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Parts of Illinois, Indiana, southwestern Ohio were also at risk for severe thunderstorms through early Tuesday, it said.

The new wave of thunderstorms on already saturated ground could lead to more flash flooding, downed trees and power lines, said Buddy Rogers, a spokesman for Kentucky Emergency Management.

About 60 homes were badly damaged by flooding near the city of Morehead, in Rowan County, Rogers said.

He encouraged people to stay off the roads, if possible, and said to never attempt to drive through a flooded area.
