[July 15, 2015]  July 14 (The Sports Xchange) - Commissioner Rob Manfred is open to future expansion beyond 30 teams in Major League Baseball.

Speaking at a Baseball Writers Association of America luncheon at the All-Star Game in Cincinnati on Tuesday, Manfred said a list of potential cities has been compiled. MLB has not added teams since 1998 when the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Rays were brought into the fold.

"Maybe one of the reasons I got this job is, I'm bullish on this game," Manfred said.

"I think we are a growth business, broadly defined. And over an extended period of time, growth businesses look to get bigger. So yeah, I'm open to the idea that there will be a point in time where expansion may be possible."

The list of potential cities for expansion or relocation could include Montreal; Charlotte, N.C.; San Antonio; Portland, Ore.; Las Vegas; Oklahoma City; northern New Jersey and Mexico City or Monterrey, Mexico.

St. Louis Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal will not pitch in the All-Star Game after experiencing arm soreness during a throwing session the previous day.

Rosenthal told National League manager Bruce Bochy and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny about his arm and the three agreed it was best for the pitcher to sit out the midsummer classic in Cincinnati, MLB.com reported.

The right-hander has 26 saves and a 1.49 ERA with 15 walks and 45 strikeouts in 42 innings this season. Rosenthal previously experienced some arm soreness in June.

The Phillies' lone All-Star is doing his best to force his way out of Philadelphia. Closer Jonathan Papelbon, never shy about asking for a trade from the cellar-dwelling Phillies, ramped up his campaign in Cincinnati ahead of the All-Star Game.

"I signed up with a team that won 102 games (in 2011), and I expected certain things," he said.

"It didn't happen, and I've tried to ride that ship and keep my mouth shut as much as I can, but it's time for the Phillies to you-know-what or get off the pot.

"I feel like three years is plenty enough time to ride it out, so to speak."

Papelbon, 34, is making $13 million this year, and his $13 million option for next year would vest if he finishes 48 games in 2015. At the break, he has finished 29 games and is 14-for-14 in save chances with a 1-1 record and a 1.60 ERA. (Editing by Andrew Both)
