[July 17, 2015]  July 16 (The Sports Xchange) - Point guard J.J. Barea re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday.

Barea averaged 7.5 points, 3.4 assists and 17.7 minutes in 77 games with the Mavericks last season.

Barea signed a four-year, $16 million deal, a major hike from the two-year, $5.7 million contract the sides agreed on two weeks ago.

The Mavericks worked toward a new deal with Barea after center DeAndre Jordan backed out of a deal to rejoin the Los Angeles Clippers.

A nine-year veteran who joined the Mavericks as an undrafted free agent in 2006, Barea has averaged 8.2 points, 3.4 assists and 18.8 minutes in 586 games with the Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Sacramento Kings signed first-round pick Willie Cauley-Stein and free-agent guard James Anderson and also voided the recent deal for forward Luc Mbah a Moute, who failed his physical.
 


The Kings used the sixth pick in the draft on the 7-foot Cauley-Stein, who was an All-American and the SEC's top defensive player as a junior at Kentucky last season.

He is the only player in school history to record 500 rebounds, 200 blocks and 100 steals.

Anderson, a first-round pick by the San Antonio Spurs in 2010, has averaged 6.3 points in 196 games with San Antonio (2010-11, 2012-13), the Houston Rockets (2012-13) and Philadelphia 76ers (2013-14).

Mbah a Moute had signed with the team on Tuesday. Mbah a Moute played nine games with the Kings at the start of the 2013-14 season and then was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Josh Smith agreed to a one-year deal worth the veteran's minimum with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Smith, a key reserve for the Houston Rockets after a buyout of his contract with the Detroit Pistons last season, is expected to replace Jamal Crawford as the first scorer off the bench for the Clippers.

Smith, 29, averaged 12.6 points per game with the Pistons and Rockets last season. He joined Houston in December.

The San Antonio Spurs announced that they have re-signed forward Kawhi Leonard.

The Spurs and Leonard agreed to a five-year, $90 million maximum deal moments into free agency July 1.

Leonard, 24, led the NBA in steals last season and was named Defensive Player of the Year. He also produced career highs of 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds.

In 2014, he was the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player after he averaged 17.8 points and 6.4 rebounds in a five-game win over the Miami Heat.
