Prospective ownership groups in Las Vegas and Quebec City submitted bids for NHL expansion teams by the deadline Monday, although no groups from Seattle made a bid.

Quebecor Inc., a media company, said it has submitted its "candidacy for the NHL expansion process in order to bring the Nordiques back to Quebec City." The Nordiques left in 1995 to become the Colorado Avalanche.

Las Vegas Hockey Vision, a group that includes the Maloof family, applied as "Black Knight Sports and Entertainment LLC," ESPN reported.

Ownership groups had to submit applications, along with the $10 million fee ($2 million non-refundable), by Monday.

The NHL has said expansion would not occur until 2017 at the earliest.

---The Nashville Predators re-signed forward Craig Smith to a five-year, $21.25 million contract on Monday.

The sides agreed to the deal after a salary arbitration hearing Monday, Sportsnet reported.

Smith, 25, had 23 goals and 21 assists last season and added two goals and three assists in six Stanley Cup Playoff games.

--- The Arizona Coyotes signed defenseman Klas Dahlbeck to a one-year, two-way contract and forward Jordan Martinook to a two-year, two-way contract.

Dahlbeck, 24, registered one goal, three assists and eight penalty minutes in 23 games with the Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks in 2014-15. The 6-foot-3, 207-pound native of Katrineholm, Sweden, also recorded 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and 35 penalty minutes in 52 games with the Portland Pirates and Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League.

---The Toronto Maple Leafs hired Steve Briere as goaltending coach.

Briere joins the Leafs after serving as the owner and head instructor of Canadian Professional Goalie Schools, in addition to his role as goaltender coach with several junior teams. Briere also has been an assistant coach at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

In addition, the Maple Leafs hired Ari Vuori as director of European scouting.
