[May 30, 2015]  LINCOLN - When this year’s 5th grade health fair contest rules were sent out to Logan County schools this winter, Amanda Geary’s class at Central Elementary School in Lincoln was excited for the challenge and went right to work. The contest required the class to sing the 5-2-1-0 healthy jingle with the winning class to be featured in both a radio commercial and a rockstar video.

“The students were very excited about it. They did almost all of the planning themselves, they needed very little help from me to submit their entry,” said Geary.

Healthy Communities Partnership has been promoting the 5-2-1-0 obesity prevention campaign for over a year to address high obesity rates in Logan County. 5-2-1-0 encourages a daily habit of eating at least 5 fruits/vegetables, no more than 2 hours of recreational screen time, at least 1 hour of physical activity, and 0 sugary sweetened beverages. On March 27 at the 5th Grade Health Fair, Mrs. Geary’s class was announced the winner to screams of excitement from the students.

The class’s radio commercial has already been playing on 96.3 WLCN for several weeks. The taping of the video took place in May and the students will view the final product for the first time during a special trip to Lincoln Theatre 4 on June 2. The public will have a chance to view the rockstar video as well. It will be playing before all movies at Lincoln Theatre 4 throughout the summer.
