As an official Looking for Lincoln Community, Atlanta joins a
family of 22 other Illinois communities that tell the story of
Lincoln’s life and times across the Abraham Lincoln National
Heritage Area.
On Saturday, June 13, 2015, at 1 p.m., President Abraham Lincoln and
Looking for Lincoln Executive Director, Sarah Watson, will formally
designate Atlanta as a Looking for Lincoln Community during
festivities for Atlanta’s Route 66 Cruise In.
The presentation will take place on Arch Street across from the
Route 66 icon – The Palms Grill Café. Historic US Route 66 in
Illinois traverses much of the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage
Area. Each year visitors from around the globe travel this historic
route, and while they are here take in all of the rich history of
the communities along the road.
Looking for Lincoln, as the coordinating body for the 42-county
Heritage Area, is a coalition and partnership of organizations and
individuals dedicated to enhancing the communities and landscapes of
central Illinois through recognition and support of their
significant natural, cultural and historical legacies.

The coalition works together to tell the unique and special stories of how
Illinois and its residents helped shape the man who would become president and
of how Lincoln helped shape Illinois. In addition, Looking for Lincoln helps
communities share their Lincoln legacy by attracting visitors to their
communities. That Lincoln tourism helps sustain and enhance economic growth
throughout the region.
