BOSTON -- The Oakland Athletics and pitcher Pat Venditte made much of the news, a fan suffered life-threatening injuries when hit by a broken bat and the Boston Red Sox won the game on Friday night at Fenway Park.

A's pitcher Venditte, who throws with either hand, came on in the seventh inning of Boston's 4-2 victory that ended Oakland's four-game winning streak, becoming the first pitcher to throw with both hands in a game since Greg Harris did it for the Montreal Expos in 1995.

Early in the game, a woman seated in the box seats was hit in the head by the broken part of Oakland third baseman Brett Lawrie's bat and was removed to a local hospital. Boston police later confirmed that she was seriously injured.

Venditte, 29, worked two scoreless innings. He pitched left-handed to get third baseman Brock Holt to ground out and then switched to right-handed for the remaining five hitters, the last being switch-hitting catcher Blake Swihart, who batted lefty and struck out.

Boston left-hander Wade Miley (5-5) worked 7 1/3 strong innings to help the Red Sox snap a two-game losing streak.

Giants 5, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA -- Buster Posey hit a tie-breaking solo homer in the seventh inning to help the Giants snap a five-game losing streak.

Third baseman Matt Duffy and right fielder Justin Maxwell also homered for the Giants, who have won their last four on the road.

First baseman Ryan Howard and third baseman Maikel Franco homered for the Phillies, who have dropped nine of 11.

Orioles 5, Indians 2

CLEVELAND -- Adam Jones homered and had two RBIs, and Chris Tillman pitched into the seventh inning to win his first game in seven weeks for Baltimore.

Jones' solo home run off right-hander Shaun Marcum broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning, and the Orioles added two insurance runs off right-hander Zach McAllister in the eighth inning.

The Orioles' final run was driven in by catcher Matt Wieters, who was playing in his first game of the season.

Blue Jays 6, Astros 2

TORONTO -- Rookie right-hander Aaron Sanchez allowed six hits while pitching into the ninth inning to help the Blue Jays win their third straight.

Shortstop Jose Reyes and right fielder Jose Bautista each hit two-run homers while left fielder Chris Colabello had three hits and one run batted in for the Blue Jays (26-30).

Sanchez (5-4) carried a shutout into the ninth before giving up the sixth homer of the season by Astros catcher Jason Castro.

Nationals 7, Cubs 5

WASHINGTON -- Second baseman Danny Espinosa scored two runs and had two hits, including a three-run homer, to help Washington end a three-game losing streak.

The Nationals led 5-1 but had to withstand two homers and three RBIs from Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

Washington starter and winner Tanner Roark (2-2) allowed six hits (three homers) and four runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Yankees 8, Angels 7

NEW YORK -- Designated hitter Alex Rodriguez moved within nine hits of 3,000 by collecting four as the Yankees held on for the win.

After trailing 8-1, the Angels scored six runs in the top of the ninth before the Yankees finally closed it out.

Rodriguez had his first four-hit game since May 22, 2011, and his second hit was a run-scoring single that also was his 1,997th RBI, which, according to statistics kept by the Elias Sports Bureau, broke a tie with Barry Bonds for second place on the all-time list.

Yankees second baseman Stephen Drew had two homers - a two-run homer in the second and a solo shot in the sixth off Angels' right-hander Jered Weaver (4-5). First baseman Mark Teixeira also hit a two-run home run as the Yankees won their fourth straight.

Rangers 4, Royals 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chi Chi Gonzalez blanked the Royals on three hits and first baseman Mitch Moreland homered to help Texas win.

Gonzalez (2-0) limited the Royals to three singles, walked two and struck out two over nine innings while recording the shutout. He beat Boston 8-0 in his big league debut, not allow a hit until the sixth inning.

Moreland opened the three-run sixth with his sixth home run as the Royals lost for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

Brewers 10, Twins 5

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Brewers scored twice in the eighth inning and three more times in the ninth to knock off the Twins.

Milwaukee blew an early 5-0 lead when the Twins scored five times in the fifth inning, but the Brewers took the lead for good on an RBI double in the eighth by designated hitter Adam Lind, who finished the game a triple short of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with six RBIs.

Padres 6, Reds 2

CINCINNATI -- San Diego's Tyson Ross, who lost his last two decisions, got the win, and Will Venable, Will Middlebrooks and Derek Norris all hit solo home runs to help the Padres to their fourth win in their last five games.

First baseman Joey Votto drove in the only two runs for the Reds, who have lost three out of their last four games.

Right-hander Jon Moscot, the fourth rookie to start this season for the Reds and third to make his major league debut, took the loss.

Ross (3-5) didn't return after rain delayed the top of the sixth for 69 minutes with the Padres having opened up a 5-2 lead.

Pirates 10, Braves 8

ATLANTA -- Left fielder Starling Marte ended an 0-for-21 slump with a two-run homer in the sixth that broke a 4-4 tie and put the Pirates ahead to stay.

Marte was 2-for-3 with two walks and scored three runs and the Pirates won for the 12th time in 14 games.

The beneficiary of Marte's home run was Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton (3-0), who had been lifted for a pinch hitter earlier in the inning.

White Sox 4, Tigers 3 (11 innings)

CHICAGO -- Detroit reliever Alex Wilson hit Avisail Garcia with a pitch with the bases loaded to score Adam Eaton with a game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th, sending Detroit to its eight straight loss.

The Tigers appeared on the brink of a 3-2 win with two outa in the ninth. But right-handed reliever Joakim Soria missed a chance for his 16th save, giving up a solo home run to White Sox first baseman Adam LaRoche for a 3-3 tie.

Cardinals 2, Dodgers 1

LOS ANGELES -- Third baseman Matt Carpenter drove in the go-ahead run in the Cardinals' two-run eighth inning, sending the Dodgers to their fourth straight loss.

Second baseman Kolten Wong's infield single scored pinch-runner Pete Kozma to tie the score at 1 with one out in the eighth inning before Carpenter followed with a sacrifice fly to right, bringing home right fielder Jason Heyward with what proved to be the winning run.

The Cardinals (37-18), who own the best mark in the major leagues, captured their fourth consecutive win.

Diamondbacks 7, Mets 2

PHOENIX -- Arizona center fielder A.J. Pollock had three hits and two RBIs and right fielder Yasmany Tomas had two hits and drove in a run.

Pollock singled in a run in the third inning, doubled and scored in the sixth and doubled in a run and scored in a four-run eighth as Jeremy Hellickson (4-3) won his third straight start.

Rays 1, Mariners 0

SEATTLE -- Tampa Bay second baseman Logan Forsythe broke a scoreless tie with a leadoff home run off Fernando Rodney in the top of the ninth inning for the game's only run.

Reliever Kevin Jepsen came on to earn his second save in as many nights, despite giving up a leadoff triple to Mariners center fielder Austin Jackson. After Jackson's triple into the gap in right-center, shortstop Brad Miller struck out and catcher Mike Zunino flew out to shallow right field. Then Dustin Ackley popped out to end the game.

Tampa Bay (30-26) had just seven hits and had to overcome the loss of starter Jake Odorizzi to a strained oblique muscle in the fifth.

Marlins 6, Rockies 2

DENVER -- Seattle's Tom Koehler limited the Rockies to one run in seven innings, helping the Mariners win their third straight game.

Play was halted after the seventh inning, and Koehler didn't return after a 1-hour, 55-minute rain delay. He allowed eight hits and one walk with six strikeouts.

Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hit his 18th home run, a 478-foot solo shot to left-center in the second. It was the longest homer hit at Coors Field.
