[March 10, 2015]  WEST PALM BEACH, FL - Mary Frances Meister Smoak, known to her family and friends as Frances, passed away on February 27, 2015 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
 

Visitation: Pending

Service: Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 12th, at Mount Pulaski Cemetery.

Obituary

PALM BEACH, FL - Mary Frances Meister Smoak, known to her family and friends as Frances, passed away on February 27, 2015 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Frances was born in Lincoln on January 23, 1920 to Frederick Meister and Mary Frances Guttery Meister. She subsequently moved with her family to Mount Pulaski, where she went to high school. Frances attended University of Colorado and American University Law School. She moved to Washington, D.C. and married Marion Smoak in 1959. They moved to Aiken, South Carolina for 10 years, and then back to Washington, D.C.

She is survived by her three children, Elmore Fitzpatrick Smoak of Bel Air, MD, Frederic Meister Smoak of Bethesda, MD, and Mary Frances Smoak Walde of Palm Beach, FL, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

 

Frances was extremely active civically: she was President of the Aiken, South Carolina Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, on the Women’s Board of Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C., very involved with The Heart Association in Aiken, South Carolina and in Washington, D.C., and a longstanding member of The International Neighbors Club in Washington. She was also an accomplished journalist and a member of The National Press Club in Washington, D.C. She wrote a column for 10 years for the Aiken Standard called “Letter from Washington” detailing humorous goings on in the Nation’s Capital.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on March 12th, 2015 at Mount Pulaski Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made in Frances’ memory to The Middleburg Humane Foundation, P.O. Box 1238,Middleburg, VA 20118, phone: (540) 364-3272, www.middleburghumane.com
