[March 13, 2015]  LINCOLN - Ronald Lee (Rod) Thompson, 76, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on March 8, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday March 11, 2015 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Service: 10:00 a.m. Thursday March 12, 2015 at the funeral home.

Obituary

LINCOLN - Ronald Lee (Rod) Thompson, 76, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on March 8, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Rod was born on April 27, 1938 in Chicago; son of Lawrence Caleb and Margie Lucille Zimmermann Thompson. He married Marlene Young on February 27, 1976 in Lincoln. She survives him in Lincoln.

Also surviving Rod are his step children: Beth (Bret) Farmer, Sheri (Neil) Leesman, and Brian (Amy) Gordon; seven grandchildren: Cory (Chynna) Farmer, Brandon (Courtnee) Farmer, Megan Farmer, Kaleb Gordon, Tate Gordon, Jenna Leesman, and Betsy Leesman; four great grandchildren: Addie, Mesa, Falyn and Sofia; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Norman, Vernon, L.C. Thompson Jr., and Victor Eugene; one sister Dorothy Thompson McCance. Rod was the last of his immediate family.

Rod’s hobbies were varied from making Indian Style Jewelry to collecting coins and vintage watches. He belonged to Lincoln Railsplitter Coin Club and Springfield Numismatic Association. He was a Teamster Member Local 916 for 30 years, and retired as a truck driver in 2000 from the state of Illinois ( L.D.C.) . He also belonged to several other unions: The United Steel Workers of America, where he worked for Republic Steel Corp. and U. S. Steel both in Chicago for 6 years. After retiring, Rod worked for Graue Chevy for 14 years as a part time driver.

Rod loved to travel having been on over a dozen cruises and had visited all 48 lower states and 3 out of 4 of all the National Parks. He was also an avid Cub fan and loved old Mississippi Delta Blues music.

Services for Rod will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday March 12, 2015 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Rev. Lisa Goodwin officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday March 11, 2015 also at the funeral home. A burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery will follow the service. Memorials may be given to the Humane Society of Logan County or Memorial Hospice.
