[March 17, 2015]  EA Sports announced Rory McIlroy will be the new cover athlete for its "next series of golf games."

The company ended a 15-year relationship with Tiger Woods in 2013 and has not released a new golf video game since. EA plans to release "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour for the PS4 and XBox One in early June, seeking to "re-energize" the franchise with the world's top-ranked golfer.

"When you grow up playing golf you never really dream of being a character in a video game, let alone the guy on the box," McIlroy told GolfDigest.com. "The technology powering the game is incredible. The courses are absolutely gorgeous, and looking at screenshots from the game you think someone just took a photo of the actual holes."

EA said the "Frostbite" engine will enable the company to provide more realistic depictions of famous golf courses and new modes of game play.

The company has not said if the plan is to release a new version of the game each year.
