Mirim Lee shot a bogey-free 65 and was at the top of a crowded leaderboard after the first round of the LPGA Kia Classic on Thursday in Carlsbad, Calif.

Lee's 7-under-par round at Aviara Golf Club gave her a one-shot lead over Yani Tseng of Taiwan. Lydia Ko, the world's No. 1-ranked player, was tied for third at 5-under 67 with Karrie Webb, China's Xiyu Lin and Cristie Kerr.

A group of 10 players another shot back at 4-under 68 included Lexi Thompson, Brittany Lang, Laura Diaz, Stacy Lewis, Austin Ernst and Inbee Par. Michelle Wie was one of 12 players who opened with a 69.

Lee, a 24-year-old South Korean who won two LPGA Tour events last year, moved into the lead on No. 5, her 14th hole of the day, with an 8-foot putt for birdie. She added her seventh birdie of the day on No. 8 after hitting a wedge within 3 feet. Lee birdied all four par-5 holes.

Tseng, bidding for her first victory since 2012, finished with a flourish. She made a birdie putt on No. 18 after hitting a fairway bunker shot within 4 feet. Her round also included a three-birdie stretch from Nos. 7 through 9 and an eagle on the par-10 No. 10.

The 17-year-old Ko had five birdies and no bogeys for her 25th consecutive under-par round on the LPGA Tour.
