[November 13, 2015]  Nov 12 (The Sports Xchange) - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger refused to rule out playing in Sunday's game because of a mid-foot sprain and might be taking a step toward convincing the team he's capable of functioning behind center.

Roethlisberger is out of the protective walking boot he required to get around Sunday after he was hurt on a sack by Oakland Raiders pass rusher Aldon Smith. Roethlisberger had been told he'd miss a few weeks.

With the Steelers having a bye next Sunday, putting him in harm's way this week against the Cleveland Browns might be risky. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said that there's a small chance Roethlisberger could play Sunday, but it's doubtful.

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant was limited in Thursday's practice because of a knee injury and afterward went on a rant aimed at reporters.

Coach Jason Garrett said Bryant's surgically repaired foot, which caused him to miss five games, is not a problem. However, Bryant didn't practice Wednesday and was being held back Thursday to make sure the injury won't prohibit him from contributing at Tampa Bay on Sunday.

In the locker room after practice, Bryant accused a reporter of using a racial slur directed at a teammate and used expletives to berate ESPNDallas.com writer Jean-Jacques Taylor. Later, when Robert Klemko of Sports Illustrated tweeted about the altercation, Bryant went off on him, too.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was back at practice Thursday, one day after sitting out with a foot injury.

Manning was viewed practicing three- and five-step dropbacks without displaying any visible signs of being bothered by the foot. Manning will start Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs and is three yards away from breaking Brett Favre's record of 71,838 career passing yards.

Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman said the NFL fined him $5,000 for wearing cleats last Sunday with "proud, brave" printed on them during the Salute to Service game against the Green Bay Packers.

"They got me for the wording that was on the side of it," Norman told reporters. "I can't have any words. It is what it is."

Norman will appeal the NFL's decision. Last season, he appealed an $11,000 fine from the league for wearing silver cleats that was reduced by half.

St. Louis Rams cornerback Lamarcus Joyner has been fined $23,152 by the NFL for his hit on Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater last Sunday.

Bridgewater was sliding at the end of a running play when Joyner hit him in the head and knocked Bridgewater out of the contest. Bridgewater is recovering and coach Mike Zimmer said he will start Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders.

Tennessee Titans defensive end David Bass is lighter in the wallet because of the big hit he put on New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees last week.

Brees had a swollen jaw and required stitches after the play on which Bass drew a flag. ESPN reported Bass was fined $17,363 by the NFL and he said he will appeal the fine.

The Indianapolis Colts claimed quarterback Charlie Whitehurst off waivers from the Tennessee Titans, the team announced.

Whitehurst was waived by the Titans on Wednesday and Indianapolis was in need of another quarterback due to Andrew Luck's kidney and abdominal injuries. Veteran Matt Hasselbeck will start in Luck's absence. (Editing by Steve Keating.)
