Volunteer Ruth Kapik takes a turn manning the refreshment table at the Holiday Open House at Pink Shutter on Saturday. Pink Shutter has been serving the Lincoln area with quality, gently used products, mostly clothing but housewares and more, for over 50 years. The thrift store is a day-to-day fundraiser for the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Many know the good works of the Auxiliary at the hospital on a day-to-day basis, but what some may not know is that the Auxiliary works hard to raise money in support of LifeLine. LifeLine is an emergency call service, offered to many seniors and people who have chronic health issues. The service allows these people to maintain their independent lifestyle and at the same time have the comfort of knowing that if they have a problem, help is just a click away.

We're calling it! Saturday, November 21st was the first "tracking snow" in Lincoln, and perhaps all of Logan County. For those who are unaware, there is an old wives tale that says whatever date of the month the first tracking snow falls on, that is the number of snows we'll have this winter. A tracking snow, in general, is enough snow on the ground to "track a rabbit." The "count" has to start with the first tracking snow. Flurries that don't amount to any kind of ground cover don't count as a starting point. But after the first tracking snow, all snow fall counts. We noted this last year when the first tracking snow fell on November 18th. LDN tracked every snow last year, and sure enough we counted 18 snow events (not necessarily accumulating snow events) in Lincoln. One correct year could have been a fluke, so we're going to track again this year, and see if we hit 21.
