[October 08, 2015]  Oct 7 (The Sports Xchange) - The St. Louis Blues placed forward Patrik Berglund on long-term injured reserve Wednesday ahead of the start of the regular season and signed forward Scott Gomez.

Berglund's status will be re-evaluated in four months, the team said. He underwent surgery on his right shoulder on Aug. 25.

The 27-year-old Berglund had 12 goals and 15 assists in 77 regular-season games and two goals and two assists in six 2015 postseason games last season for the Blues.

The 35-year-old Gomez, a two-time All-Star and 2000 Calder Trophy winner, had seven goals and 27 assists in 58 games for the New Jersey Devils last season.

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom will miss the season-opening game against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday because of an unspecified injury suffered in Tuesday's practice.

The injury is not considered serious, and Markstrom is listed as day-to-day.

The Canucks recalled goalie Richard Bachman on Wednesday, and will serve as the backup to Ryan Miller.

The Detroit Red Wings placed veteran winger Dan Cleary on waivers during the final roster cutdown before the start of the regular season.

The 36-year-old Cleary played in just 17 games last season and had two points after seeing action in 52 games the season before that and posting eight points. In four exhibition games this year, he had two points.

The San Jose Sharks signed defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald to a standard entry-level contract, the team announced.

Fitzgerald, 19, currently leads all Halifax (QMJHL) defensemen in points, posting three goals and two assists in his first seven games this season.
