[October 17, 2015]   LINCOLN - The 4th Saturday in October, which this year falls on October 24, marks the 32nd anniversary of the Harvest of Talents for World Hunger, a unique ministry founded at Lincoln Christian Church. Tradition holds that the doors open at 7 a.m., immediately following a time of reflection and prayer.

Early morning attendees will be greeted by the inviting, subtle fragrance of the Harvest’s signature cinnamon and caramel pecan rolls, fresh from the oven and ready for dining in or speedy carryout’s.

While some guests head straight for the dining room - others enter with huge tote bags in hand focused on a dozen or so shopping booths. There they will satisfy their birthday, wedding, baby shower, and Christmas shopping lists with a myriad of handmade items.

One unique feature of the “Harvest” is that all items sold must be handmade or represent a talent or skill of the maker. Many items are original creations and one of a kind. For some, the home canned jams and jellies and the breads and pies, as well as the handmade candies and snack mixes will top their priority list. Others delight in the offerings of “Gifts From Around the World”, featuring a wide variety of third world treasures purchased by summer travelers and missionary friends.

Pet lovers, cooks, gardeners, photographers, stitchers, Christmas and home decorators, jewelry lovers, sports fans ~ just about everyone will find something to their liking.

As the sun comes up the activities in Harvest Fare (the church parking lot) will come to life beginning with a 5K Harvest Run and a 1 mile Kids Fun Run Walk in cooperation with Lincoln YMCA.

Lincolnberry Prairie Café will offer a variety of scones, breads, cookies, snacks, and Al Carder’s tasty brisket sandwiches, accompanied by hot spiced cider, flavored coffees, and hot chocolate. Kettle corn will be made and sold by Boy Scout Troop #4111. Walking tacos (served by the I.D.E.S. staff) will be available as well as deep fried potatoes and hot dogs. Come satisfy your hunger and thirst.

From 9 to 11 a.m. crafts for children (inside) will be offered as well as child care for a donation.

Harvest vegetable soup (cooked outside in large black kettles) will be served from 10 to 1 p.m., with bbq sandwiches and homemade pie.

Harvest Day activities climax with the 2 p.m. Auction featuring unique quilts, fine needlework, woodworking, photography, floral arrangements, and many one of a kind items.

There is no admission fee for a day of food, fellowship and fun with plenty of free parking, a monitored parcel check room, and a handicap accessible facility.

All proceeds from the Harvest go to International Disaster Emergency Service, a Christian organization based in Noblesville, IN, to aid hunger victims around the world.

All funds raised will be presented to I.D.E.S. during Celebration Sunday Worship at 10 a.m., Sunday, October 25, in the L C U Chapel.
