[October 20, 2015]  MOUNT PULASKI - Roger John Bates, 64, of Mount Pulaski, passed away at 5:33 p.m. Thursday October 15, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Visitation: Tuesday October 20, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski

Service: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday October 21, at the funeral home.

Obituary

Roger John Bates, 64, of Mount Pulaski, passed away at 5:33 p.m. Thursday October 15, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Roger was born on September 8, 1951 in Clinton, to John N. and Estella Mae Grandfield Bates Jr. He married Rachel Ramsey on January 16, 1974 in Arlington, VA. He later married Karen Crawford on May 5, 1984 in Midlothian, VA. She survives of Mount Pulaski.

Also surviving is his daughter, Kathleen Marie Bates Hammerle of Houston, Texas, and two grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers Thomas and Randall.

Roger was a retired correctional officer for the State of Illinois. He was of the Lutheran Faith. He was a member of the Mount Pulaski VFW Post #777, Mount Pulaski American Legion Post #447, an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears fan and was a history buff and avid reader.

Roger served in the United States Army from 1970-1974 during Vietnam. He later joined the United States Navy and served from 1976-1985.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday October 21, 2015 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski, with Rev. Jonathan Buescher officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday October 20, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will be at Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, where full military rites will be accorded. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, or the American Heart Association.
