[October 22, 2015]  (Reuters) - New Mexico police arrested a man on Thursday after an Albuquerque officer was shot and critically injured when he stopped a vehicle to question the driver, the department said.

The officer was undergoing surgery, Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden Jr. told reporters late on Wednesday, while residents on the east side of the city were urged to report any suspicious activity.

"There was an altercation and the officer was shot multiple times," Eden said, noting that the officer's name was being withheld until after his family was notified.

Eden said the officer, who had a body-worn camera, had been in the police force for eight years and was shot during what appeared to be a routine traffic stop.

Police did not immediately release details on the suspect, or where he was arrested.

The incident comes a day after a New York City police officer was shot and killed while pursuing a suspect near a busy Manhattan roadway.
