[October 22, 2015]  DECATUR - Big Blue Volleyball Wins Three Times on East Coast  - The Millikin volleyball team scored three victories during its Fall Break Trip to the New York City area on October 16 and 17.

On Saturday, Millikin defeated Kean University 3-0 and Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham 3-1 in matches played at Kean in Union, New Jersey. Millikin defeated Kean 25-21, 25-15, 25-10. Erin Syversen (Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Waukesha West H.S.) led the way with 14 kills, six digs and two service aces. Alora Goodey (Lincoln, H.S.) had seven kills and two blocks. Cassidy Kingery (Heyworth, H.S.) had a team high 10 digs along with two service aces. Emily Mihalkanin (Willowbrook, Hinsdale South H.S.) had 31 set assists.

Millikin defeated FDU-Florham 25-15, 24-26, 25-16, 25-14. Syversen had 16 kills, 15 digs and three service aces. Emily Seegmiller (Arthur, Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond H.S.) had 12 kills and two blocks. Cortney Bohn (Mahomet, Mahomet-Seymour H.S.) had 10 kills and two blocks. Kelsey Talkington (North Aurora, Aurora Catholic H.S.) had eight kills and three blocks while Goodey added eight kills and two blocks. Kingery had 17 digs and 11 service aces and Mihalkanin had 43 set assists and 14 digs.

Millikin volleyball scored a 3-1 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey on October 16.

Millikin won 25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23. Syversen led the Big Blue with 19 kills, 13 digs and two service aces. Senior Melissa Hanika (Geneva, H.S.) added 14 kills and Talkington added nine. Mihalkanin had 55 set assists and 15 digs. Kingery had a team high 27 digs for Millikin.

The Millikin volleyball team dropped a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match to North Central College 3-2 on October 13 at the Griswold Center.

The match was a wild one with the momentum taking major swings all night. Millikin won the opening set 25-23 and the Cardinals took the second set 25-22. The Big Blue looked to have the match in control after winning the third set 25-18 and jumping out to an 11-1 lead in the fourth set. North Central stage a strong comeback in the fourth set fighting its way back and tying the match at 22-22 before pulling out the victory 25-23. North Central took the back-and-forth fifth set 15-13.

Millikin got 22 kills and four aces from Syversen. Bohn had 11 kills and five blocks. Goodey had a team high six blocks and seven kills. Kingery led Millikin with 19 kills. Milhalkanin had 43 set assists.

Millikin is now 18-8 and will be back on the court in a key CCIW match on Wednesday, October 21 hosting Illinois Wesleyan University.

Millikin Cross Country Competes in Mega Meet

The Millikin men’s and women’s cross country team ran at the AAE Cross Country Invitational hosted by Wisconsin-Osh Kosh at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wisconsin. The meet featured teams from 13 different states and included a large number of nationally ranked teams. The race was a preview of the NCAA Cross Country Championships set for the same course in late November.
 


Millikin’s Sarah Bradley (Decatur, MacArthur H.S.) continued her outstanding season finishing in sixth place in a school record time of 21:24.18. The women’s race featured 414 runners racing on the 6K course.

Millikin’s Jamie Michl (Newton, H.S.) was 182nd in 23:44.48. Rachel Sapp (Decatur, Meridian H.S.) ran the course in 24:21.78, which was 16th fastest in school history. Sapp finished in 254th place. Elizabeth Shappard (Carbondale, H.S.) finished in 319th in Millikin’s 25th fastest time at 25:13.35.

In the men’s competition, Millikin finished in 43rd. The Big Blue’s top finisher was freshman Alexander Erickson (Waterford, Wisconsin, Mukego H.S.) in 172nd in a time of 26:28.9.

Millikin will be back in action on October 31 in the CCIW Championships hosted by Carthage College.

Big Blue Men’s Soccer Downs Monmouth

The Millikin men’s soccer team took a break from conference play and defeated Monmouth College 3-0 on October 14 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois.

Millikin’s opening goal came in the 35th minute when Peter Sinise (Monee, Bishop McNamara H.S.) converted a penalty kick. The Big Blue added two second period goals to secure the victory. Nick Schaefer (Cherry Valley, Boylan Catholic H.S.) scored from 15 yards out front of the net off a corner kick from Hunter Somers (Heyworth, University H.S.). Millikin’s final goal came in the final minute of the game when freshman John Fauser (Greendale, Wisconsin, H.S.) scored his third goal of the season with the assist going to Michael Flores.

Millikin’s Daniel Sinclair (Peoria, Richwoods H.S.) had four saves in goal in the win.

Millikin lost a tight CCIW battle 1-0 at Elmhurst College on October 17 in Elmhurst, Illinois.

Each team managed 12 shots in the game, but the Big Blue could only target five shots on goal.

Elmhurst had eight shots on goal with Millikin Sinclair recording seven saves.

Millikin is now 9-4, 0-3 and will travel to Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, October 21 for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Big Blue Women’s Soccer Rolls Past Rockford

The Millikin University women’s soccer team defeated Rockford University 5-0 on October 12 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois.

Millikin scored four goals in a 10 minute span late in the first period to secure the victory. Freshman Rachel Patty (Hazelwood, Missouri, Hazelwood West H.S.) had two goals for Millikin.

Millikin other two goals went to freshman Taylor Hartman (Saint Anne, Herscher H.S.), junior Nicole McKevitt (Lemont, H.S.) and junior Angela Pulice (Tinley Park, H.S.).

Millikin lost at Elmhurst College 3-0 in a conference match on October 17 in Elmhurst, Illinois.

Millikin is 6-7, 1-2 and will travel to Illinois Wesleyan on October 21.


Millikin Football Loses at #5 Wheaton

The Millikin football team lost at #5 Wheaton College 62-14 on October 17 in Wheaton, Illinois.

Millikin stayed with the national power during the first quarter with the scored tied at 14-14 at the end of the quarter.

Trailing 7-0, Millikin scored on a 16-yard pass from Nicco Stepina (Casey, Casey Westfield H.S.) to Brady Cufaude (Pekin, H.S.) to tie the game at 7-7.

After Wheaton scored, Millikin answered on a one yard run by freshman Marquis Spears (Bourbonnais, Bradley Bourbonnais H.S.) to make it 14-14.

Stepina was 20-32 passing for 179 yards. Cufaude led the Millikin receivers with eight catches for 90 yards.

Wheaton improves to 6-0, 3-0 while Millikin falls to 1-5, 0-3.

The Big Blue will host North Park University on October 24 at 1 p.m.

Millikin Women’s Tennis Downs Illinois Wesleyan

The Millikin women's tennis team defeated Illinois Wesleyan 6-3 on October 15 at the Fairview Tennis Center in Decatur, Illinois.

In singles play, Millikin won in positions two through five. The Big Blue's Paige Bequette (Edwardsville, H.S.) won 7-6, 6-2. Molly Angell (Ottawa, Ottawa H.S.) won over the Titans Randi Wilson 6-4, 6-1. At number four singles, Melissa Donovan (Antioch, H.S.) of Millikin won 6-3, 7-6 over Allie Spontak. Millikin's Amber Morgan (Taylorville, H.S.) downed Kayleigh Ruffolo 6-4, 6-4.

 



Millikin won at number one double 8-0 with Angell and Donovan picking up the victory. The Big Blue took the number two double match when Bequette and Taylor Stanchin (Leo, Indiana, Carroll H.S.) won 8-4.

Millikin wraps up its fall schedule October 22-24 at the CCIW Championships.
