SPRINGFIELD – Lincoln used a timeout to stop the running clock with under a minute to go in the fourth quarter of Thursday night's game against Lanphier High School.

The outcome was already decided, Lanphier exploited a woeful tackling exposition to rack-up 61 points, but that didn't matter as Lincoln walked to the line of scrimmage with a half a minute or so left in the game.

Andrew Yount took the snap, fired quickly to his left to Titus Cannon who then launched the ball toward the end zone.

“I knew if we could get the ball off to Garrett (Aeilts) he would catch it. There was no way he was dropping that ball,” Railer Head Coach Seth Bass said.

Aeilts, who spent the game under center, had sneaked his way from wide receiver into the corner of the end zone.

He snagged the ball out of the air in front of a pair of Lanphier defenders, and Lincoln scored its third touchdown of the game.

Lincoln played its best offense of the season Thursday night, but also its worst defense.

“Defensively we can't translate what we work on (in practice),” Bass said. “Tackling continues to be an issue for us.”

Lanphier didn't do anything special.

The Lions ran the ball right at Lincoln, but Railer defenders flailed and tried to arm tackle Lanphier's big, strong backs.

But the offense finally clicked.

“It just proves we can make plays, we can play hard, we can put points on the board,” Aeilts said after the latest loss of the season.

But make no mistake, the final loss was perhaps the biggest moral victory.

Lincoln scored three times, more than in the previous eight games combined.

Nathan Podunajnec scampered nearly 20 yards for a second quarter touchdown.

And Aeilts tossed a fourth quarter score to a wide open Titus Cannon. He then caught that last second TD.

“I think is good to build on for next year,” Podujanec said. “We know we can score. We just need to keep building off that.

Podujanec and Yount and juniors, Cannon is a sophomore. Bass said he's looking to them next year.

“Our trio of backs, Yount, Podujanec, and Cannon all did an excellent job and ran the ball hard,” Bass noted after the game. “Garrett's going to be a big loss for us a quarterback (next year). But we'll have several guys who'll compete for that position next year. Ad we'll be able to build off of the success we had tonight.”

Lincoln finishes the year 0-9. It's the third straight year the Railsplitters have failed to win a game.
