[September 05, 2015]  LINCOLN – Lincoln High School head coach Seth Bass could only shake his head after sending his team off the field after a 65-0 loss to Chatham Glenwood.

“The was embarrassing,” the first year coach admitted.

And while the results of another game against another Central State Eight powerhouse were the same as last year, Bass' reaction is not.

“We preached all week about about giving our best effort for six seconds at a time. And I really didn't see that from a lot of our guys,” Bass said.

That the new coach is that unhappy about losing, and that unhappy with the effort of his team is new this year.

“We came out scared, we came out scared in the pre-game and it showed in the way we played,” Bass added. “We're got to realize that playing scared is not a way to be successful.

And the Railers were not successful Friday night.

Chatham Glenwood easily scored 42 points in the first quarter.

The Titans ran the lead to 59 by the end of the first half.

The only thing that slowed the Titan offense was their own penalties.

The referees flagged Chatham more than a dozen times, including five penalties on one drive that erased two touchdowns.

Glenwood Coach Dan Rourke said many of those penalties came from kids trying to hustle a bit too much.

“Everybody wants to get into the end zone, everyone wants to make the big block,” Rourke said of the frequent flags thrown at his team. “We gotta work on those.”

Chatham improves to 2-0 on the season, Lincoln falls to 0-2.

Bass said his team needs to improve on the field and in their heads for next week.

Junior safety Alex Linares, who had a standout game on defense, echoed his coach.

“Even on my part, I arm tackled (on defense), we all need to chop our feet and bring them down,” Linares said after the game.

Junior Andrew Yount closed out the game at quarterback after Bass said senior Garrett Aeilts left banged-up in the second quarter.

“I haven't gotten too many quarterback reps, but for the first time this season, it wasn't too bad,” Yount said.

Yount finished the game with 46 rushing yards and 20 passing yards. Aeilts threw for nine yards, and both quarterbacks tossed an interception.

Bass challenged his team to finally execute on the field next week.

Lincoln travels to Springfield for a Saturday evening game against Springfield High School next week.
