[September 15, 2015]  Sept 14 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Monday's Major League Baseball games.

Mets 4, Marlins 3

Third baseman David Wright laced a tie-breaking ground-rule RBI double with two outs in the seventh inning as the New York Mets produced another comeback win by beating the Miami Marlins 4-3 at Citi Field on Monday.

With their season-high eighth straight win, the Mets (83-61) lead the National League East by 9 1/2 games.

The Marlins (61-83) lost their second in a row and fell to 8-4 in September.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 0

Right-hander Kevin Gausman threw six innings of two-hit ball, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 2-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

The Orioles, who won for the fifth time in six games, still hold out hope for a late playoff push. The Red Sox, meanwhile, are trying to climb out of the American League East cellar.

Yankees 4, Rays 1

Slade Heathcott hit a three-run homer to cap a ninth-inning rally by the New York Yankees in a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on Monday.

Heathcott, a defensive replacement in right field for Carlos Beltran, belted the first pitch he saw from Rays closer Brad Boxberger over the left-field wall. Pinch runner Chris Young and catcher Brian McCann scored on the home run.

Indians 8, Royals 3

Carlos Carrasco struck out nine in six innings, and Lonnie Chisenhall had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Cleveland Indians to an 8-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday at Progressive Field.

Carrasco (13-10) gave up one run on five hits.

Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez (13-8) gave up four runs in five innings and took the loss, Kansas City's 10th in its past 14 games.

Twins 7, Tigers 1

Tyler Duffey pitched 6 1/3 strong innings and got plenty of offensive support as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 7-1 at Target Field on Monday.

Duffey allowed just one run and scattered seven hits along with two walks while fanning seven in winning his third game.

The Twins were led offensively by third baseman Trevor Plouffe, who got the offense going with a two-run double in the first inning.

Nationals 8, Phillies 7 (11 innings)

Third baseman Yunel Escobar drove in the winning run with a fielder's choice in the 11th inning as the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-7.

Left fielder Jayson Werth hit two home runs for Washington, a grand slam and a solo shot in the 10th. Right fielder Bryce Harper and second baseman Anthony Rendon also homered for the Nationals, who remained 9 1/2 games behind the first-place New York Mets in the National League East.

Rangers 5, Astros 3

Designated hitter Prince Fielder's tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning lifted the Rangers to a 5-3 victory over the Astros on Monday, pulling Texas within a half-game of Houston in the American League West.

Texas (76-67) opened the four-game series at Globe Life Park with their ninth win over Houston (77-67) in 13 meetings this year. The half-game deficit is the closest the Rangers have been to first place in the division this season.

- - -

Giants 5, Reds 3

Third baseman Matt Duffy drove in two runs with a first-inning double, and seven pitchers combined to hold the Cincinnati Reds to seven hits, lifting the San Francisco Giants to their fourth consecutive win, a 5-3 triumph in the opener of a three-game series.

[to top of second column]

Duffy, center fielder Angel Pagan and first baseman Brandon Belt had two hits apiece as the Giants built a 4-0 lead and held on for their fourth victory against the Reds this season in five head-to-heads.

Dodgers 4, Rockies 1

Clayton Kershaw defeated the Colorado Rockies for the ninth time in a row in a 4-1 victory by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday at Dodger Stadium.

Kershaw (14-6) limited Colorado to a run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks on 105 pitches (71 strikes) in seven innings. The consecutive wins over the Rockies by Kershaw tied the club record set by former Los Angeles right hander Brad Penny (2006-08).

Overall, Kershaw is 9-0 in his last 13 outings. Kershaw's 264 major league-leading strikeouts leave him six short of surpassing the Los Angeles franchise mark of 269 for third best in a season by Sandy Koufax.

Mariners 10, Angels 1

The Los Angeles Angels could not capitalize on a chance to put themselves back in the thick of the American League West race when the Seattle Mariners hammered them 10-1.

Coming off one of the most frustrating losses of the season after the Houston Astros scored five two-out runs in the top of the ninth on Sunday, the Angels never found a groove Monday night at Safeco Field.

Seattle (70-75) used a three-run second inning to take an early lead, then piled on with six runs in the seventh.

Padres 10, Diamondbacks 3

San Diego first baseman Wil Myers homered and drove in four runs and right-hander James Shields reached 200 strikeouts for the third time in five seasons in the Padres' 10-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Monday.

Myers homered to lead off the game and hit a three-run double to cap a five-run fifth inning, one of two five-run innings.

Shields (12-6) gave up one run on four hits while striking out six in seven innings. He struck out a career-high 225 in 2011 and had 223 the next year, both with Tampa Bay.

White Sox 8, A's 7 (14 innings)

After blowing a four-run lead in the ninth inning, the Chicago White Sox rebounded to beat the Oakland A's 8-7 in 14 innings at U.S. Cellular Field.

Left fielder Melky Cabrera (4-for-8) lined a two-out single off Oakland right-hander Arnold Leon (0-2) in the 14th that just barely scored catcher Geovany Soto from second to end the game 5 hours, 9 minutes after it began. Soto started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. (Editing by Peter Rutherford)
