Hernandez (17-9) had a three-start winning streak snapped, allowing four runs off five hits over seven innings.

The long-ball was his nemesis, as Murphy gave the Angels a 3-1 lead with a three-run shot in the third inning and Trout hit his 36th home run of the season to put Los Angeles ahead 4-2 in the sixth.

Jon Lester pitched a five-hitter, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates and a split of a day-night doubleheader between National League contenders.

Left fielder Stephen Piscotty grounded into a force at second to bring up Heyward. Thornburg (0-2) quickly fell into a 3-0 hole, and on a 3-1 count, fired a fastball that Heyward sent to right for his 12th home run of the season.
