[September 21, 2015]  LINCOLN - Lincoln youth football had a very successful weekend. It started off Saturday morning with kindergarten/first grade playing Jacksonville to an 8-8 tie.

Then the undefeated second/third grade team played the undefeated Riverton Hawks. Riverton was on a 15 game winning streak and just knocked off Rochester last week 36-6. So the Lincoln second/third-graders knew they had to be ready for a battle. And ready they were, knocking off Riverton 18-6 to run their record to a perfect 7-0.

LYFL then had fourth and fifth grade traveling to Chatham Saturday afternoon, which is never a fun time. However this Saturday it would be nothing but fun for Lincoln.

As the fourth grade spanked Chatham for the second time this year 26-6, Kion Carson had two tds in the game, Colbie Glenn had 1 td, as did Gage Hodges.

The defense was lead by Wyatt Mammen and Burke Wilken, who led the team with 6 tackles a piece.

Chatham scored their only td with a couple minutes left in the game or it would have been Lincoln's third shutout this year. They previous beat Chatham 28-0 and Taylorville 32-0. The fourth grade now has a record of 5-2 and travels to Petersburg Wednesday night.

Lincoln may have played the best game of the year in the night cap. The LYF fifth grade team was down 6-0 with 1 min to play at Chatham and Lincoln held and forced Chatham to punt. That is when the magic started to happen for Lincoln as with less than a minute to go Jaden Leadley returned the punt 45 yds to the Chatham 16 yd line and with zeros on the clock Andy Knox was able to connect with Zac Manley for an 11 yd td pass to send the game to overtime. It was the first catch of Zac Manley's career and first td of his career, and just happened to be the biggest catch of the year.

The fifth graders work was not done, and they were fired up and determined to leave Chatham with a win. Lincoln held Chatham to four plays and out. Lincoln took over on downs, and not be out done, Knox connected with Leadley in the corner of the end zone for an 11yd td pass and victory.

Issac Decker had an interception, and Jac Halsey and Lucas Dixon both had fumble recoveries in the game.

Coach Sam Knox said it was by far the most exciting finish he had ever been a part of. Commissioner Steve Farris said the kids were going crazy with excitement and that is why we do what we do for days like these the kids will remember that experience forever.

It was Lincoln fifth grade's second win this week after they beat Petersburg 14-6 Wednesday night. So to make it a clean sweep vs Chatham, Lincoln needed its sixth-graders to step up big time as they would welcome Chatham to town Sunday at 3 p.m.

The sixth-graders were willing to accept the challenge put before them. They easily defeated Chatham 32-0 to earn there first win of what had become a very frustrating year for them. They had something to prove and they did not disappoint as Andrew Cline would score 3 tds, and Tony Gandolfi and Ejiah Pollice would both score too. The defense was led by Gandolfi would had 6 tackles and Everett Maaks had an interception.

Seventh and eighth grade had their games rescheduled due to baseball regionals. Lincoln youth football will be back in action next Saturday and Sunday at beautiful Eaton Fields.
