WHAT: Fatal Traffic Crash with Road Closure

WHERE: I-55 N/B MP 118, Logan County

WHEN: Sunday 09/20/15 at 9:10 P.M.

VEHICLES:
Unit 1: 2006 Silver Freightliner Truck Tractor Semi Trailer Combination
Unit 2: 2004 Ford F-650

DRIVERS:
Unit 1: Michael W. Marsh, 64, Benton, AR.
Unit 2: Jamal W. Horvath, 22, Rochester, Il.

PRELIMINARY: According to the preliminary traffic crash investigation District 9 responded to a truck tractor semi-trailer versus pedestrian crash on I-55 northbound near milepost 118.

The pedestrian, Jamal W. Horvath, who was working as a tow truck operator and standing next to the driver’s side of his marked tow truck, which had its amber rotating / flashing lights activated, was in the process of removing a disabled vehicle from the right shoulder of the interstate when he was struck by a passing truck tractor semi-trailer.

Mr. Horvath was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash by the Logan County Coroner’s Office. The driver of the truck tractor semi-trailer, Mr. Michael W. Marsh, was not injured. The right and center lanes of I-55 near the crash scene were shut down for several hours will police conducted their investigation.

CHARGES: Mr. Marsh was cited for failing to yield to a stationary authorized emergency vehicle and improper lane usage. The investigation continues.
