[September 22, 2015]  Sept 21 (The Sports Xchange) - David Stearns, who was officially announced as the Milwaukee Brewers' new general manager during a Monday press conference, said he plans to keep Craig Counsell as the Brewers' manager.

New general managers often like to name their own field manager, but the 30-year-old Stearns suggested that he would stick with Counsell. In fact, Stearns said having Counsell as the manager was "an attractive part of the job."

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will be shut down for at least five to seven days after it was revealed that he had a slight ligament tear in his left thumb, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said.

Mozeliak said he believes Molina will return this season, and the Cardinals hope he will be back for the playoffs.

New York Yankees right-hander Nathan Eovaldi still has inflammation in his right elbow, making his return for the regular season more unlikely. He must wait another week before throwing.

The Houston Astros recalled right-hander Dan Straily from Triple-A Fresno to provide additional depth among their corps of long relievers.

New York Mets infielder Juan Uribe, who suffered a chest contusion while diving for a ball on Sunday, was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday.

Mets manager Terry Collins said right-hander Jacob deGrom, whose turn in the rotation is being skipped Tuesday, will likely start during a four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds that begins Thursday. DeGrom has a 6.31 ERA in his last five starts.

Atlanta Braves right-handed pitcher Mike Foltynewicz, who was hospitalized due to blood clots Sunday, underwent surgery Monday.

Cincinnati Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton rejoined the team after being sidelined with a shoulder injury, but he was not in the starting lineup for the sixth straight game on Monday.

Washington Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman had not played since Sept. 7 and has not swung a bat since then as he deals with an oblique injury. But manager Matt Williams is not ready to shut down Zimmerman for the season. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
