[September 23, 2015]  Sept 22 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlight from Major League Baseball games on Tuesday:

Cubs 4, Brewers 0

Jake Arrieta became baseball's first 20-game winner of the season with a sharp complete-game outing in the Chicago Cubs' 4-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Arrieta (20-6) got all the support he needed on third baseman Kris Bryant's third inning two-run homer.

The Wrigley Field crowd stood on its feet and roared as Arrieta worked a one-two-three ninth that included two strikeouts.

A Cy Young Award candidate, Arrieta scattered three hits, struck out 11 and walked just one in a complete-game collaboration with catcher Miguel Montero.

Arrieta, 29, is the Cubs' first 20-game winner since Jon Lieber went 20-6 in 2001 and 27th Cub since 1900 to reach that milestone in a season. It was his fifth straight outing of eight or more innings, his fourth complete game of the season and third complete-game shutout.

Rays 5, Red Sox 2

Evan Longoria's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox.

Mikie Mahtook put the game out of reach with a two-run home run in the eighth, as the Tampa Bay center fielder launched a pitch over the Green Monster in left field.

Orioles 4, Nationals 1

Ubaldo Jimenez earned his 100th career victory as he gave up one unearned run in six innings as the Baltimore Orioles beat Washington Nationals.

The Orioles (74-76) prevailed behind two runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth.

Phillies 6, Marlins 2

Right-hander Aaron Harang earned his first win since July 30 while third baseman Cody Asche hit two solo homers to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-2 win over the Miami Marlins.

Harang (6-15) allowed seven hits, two walks and two runs in seven innings, shutting down the Marlins (64-87) in a battle between two of the worst teams in baseball.

Braves 6, Mets 2

Matt Wisler earned his first win in almost two months while Jace Peterson and Hector Olivera each homered during a four-run fifth inning that lifted the Atlanta Braves to a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets.

Wisler (6-8) pitched seven-plus innings, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out eight. He was 0-7 with a 7.71 ERA in 10 games since his previous win on July 26.

Tigers 2, White Sox 1 (10 innings)

Rajai Davis hit a walk-off triple in the 10th inning after Tyler Saladino's ninth-inning triple foiled Detroit's bid for a combined no-hitter in the Tigers' win over the Chicago White Sox.

Tigers starter Daniel Norris tossed five perfect innings and relievers Buck Farmer, Ian Krol and Drew VerHagen threw a hitless inning each.

The only White Sox baserunner during those innings was center fielder Adam Eaton, who was hit by a Krol pitch to start the seventh inning.

Yankees 6, Blue Jays 4 (10 innings)

Greg Bird hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning as the New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4.

Blue Jays catcher Dioner Navarro had tied the game at 3-3 with a one-out homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Bird then hit his 11th homer of the season against right-hander Mark Lowe (1-3) with one out and two on base in the 10th.

The Yankees (83-67) moved to within 2-1/2 games of the first-place Blue Jays (86-65) in the American League East.

Twins 3, Indians 1

Ervin Santana threw seven-plus innings and gave up jut one hit as the Minnesota Twins beat the Cleveland Indians.

Santana scattered five hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Mariners 11, Royals 2

Robinson Cano homered twice and Hisashi Iwakuma pitched seven shutout innings as the Seattle Mariners ripped the Kansas City Royals.

The Mariners hit five home runs, scoring all their runs in the first four innings.

Iwakuma (9-4) checked the Royals on three singles before being pulled after seven innings. He struck out a season-high 10 and walked one.

Cardinals 3, Reds 1

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher John Lackey (13-9) struck out seven, scattered nine hits and did not walk a batter in their 3-1 win over Cincinnati.

The Cardinals improved to 95-56 while the Reds fell to 63-87.

Angels 4, Astros 3

Mike Trout and Albert Pujols smacked back-to-back home runs in the first inning as the Los Angeles Angels' completed a 4-3 win over the Houston Astros.

The Angels pounced on Astros rookie right-hander Lance McCullers two pitches into the game, with shortstop Erick Aybar reaching on a bunt single to set the table for Trout, who launched a first-pitch fastball 398 feet to left-center field for a 2-0 lead.

The home run was Trout's 40th of the season.

Designated hitter Pujols then added his 36th homer of the year, a 443-foot blast to left field that bumped the lead to 3-0.

Pirates 6, Rockies 3

The Pittsburgh Pirates scored in each of the first four innings, tallying all of their six runs, as they produced a 6-3 win over the Colorado Rockies.

J.A. Happ (10-8), worked 5-1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Diamondbacks 8, Dodgers 0

Center fielder A.J. Pollock and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks produced an 8-0 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray struck out seven and walked two, limiting Los Angeles to three hits in six innings.

Giants 4, Padres 2

Center fielder Angel Pagan's two-run homer lifted the San Francisco Giants past the San Diego Padres.

Pagan's blast in the seventh inning extended the Giants' lead after shortstop Brandon Crawford's two-out RBI single in the sixth.

The Giants (79-71) gained ground on the NL West-leading Dodgers and trail Los Angeles (85-65) by six games.

Rangers 8, A's 6

First baseman Mitch Moreland hit his 23rd home run of the season as the Texas Rangers rallied to defeat the Oakland.
 


Texas (81-69) increased their lead in the American League West to two games over the Houston Astros (80-72).
